We can call it the Lapchick Holiday Festival and kill two birds with one stone.

Still disappointing that they are not in a pre-season exempt Tourney.

That might make those living down memory lane somewhat happy.

But as you know it's current iteration is just one game.  The Lapchick tournament had two games but schools just don't do that anymore.  It's all Multi Team Events and as Fordham and others have pointed out we're not in one next year.

The Lapchick Tournament was the "norm" in its day.  Major schools would host a 4 team tournament such as ours.  There were very few tournaments in the "old" days other than the Rainbow., the Real Holiday tournament at MSG with at least 6 teams (and they were great games with GO card you could see 3 games for 50cents) and a few others.  Look at the Media guide and see the various "tournaments/classics" we played in at other schools (BYU, Vandy, Kentucky, Maryland, Tenn,. Marshall, etc.).  (Heck, look at Syracuse and their "Carrier Classic" competition.)   Then revenue became a factor in getting teams to fill 3 slots in your "homer" tournament; basically double headers diluted the revenue to be paid to the cupcakes.  For Lapchick, day one's revenue had to be divided among 4 teams and same on day to.  Now playing St. Pete's and NJIT on separate nights (no tournament) one games' revenue is divided  between 2 teams

As someone once said (don't recall who) about the Lapchick Tournament "St. John's invites 3 teams it knows it can beat and calls it a classic".

The Slapstick tournament and no disrespect to Coach Lapchick.

The Holiday Festival and the Lapchick Tourney were never exempt tourney's anyway so having them would not preclude SJU from playing in a exempt Tourney.  In other words they can and have done both.

FYI-Here is a list of these Tourney's.  Interesting looks like the matchup with Pittsburgh at MSG is being counted as exempt.  Exempt simply means that the Tourney only counts as 1 game towards your maximum schedule limit.  So even if you play 2, 3 or 4 games depending on how big the field is it only counts as 1 games towards your maximum number of games allowed.

When the Lapchick tournament started in 1975 it was a lot different than how it ended up as a cupcake city tournament for SJU. At first decent teams were willing to come to NYC for two games for what must have been meager payments and some of the teams that participated in those first ten years were Mich. St,, Ala., Oral Robert’s, Xav., St. Bon.,U Penn and Old Dominion.
After those first ten years teams wouldn’t give up two games and the competition went down.
