QUEENS, N.Y. (Dec. 21, 2020) – After helping the St. John’s men’s basketball team to its first league win of the season on Sunday against Georgetown, Posh Alexander has been named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, it was announced Monday morning by the conference office.

Alexander, a Brooklyn native who played his high school basketball at Our Saviour Lutheran in the Bronx, took home his first weekly honor from the BIG EAST after averaging 11.5 points, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals in a 1-1 week for the Red Storm.

On Thursday against No. 9/9 Creighton, Alexander finished with 13 points, the team’s second highest total, on 6-of-11 shooting and dished out three assists.

Three nights later against Georgetown, Alexander was one of five Johnnies to reach double figures, scoring 10 points to go along with three assists and three steals.

On the season, Alexander is averaging 10.1 points per game while leading the team in both assists (4.2 apg) and steals 2.4 (spg).

Alexander, who leads all BIG EAST freshmen with 30.5 minutes played per game, is tied with teammate Greg Williams Jr. for the league lead in steals while ranking second among freshmen and seventh overall in assists. Alexander’s 1.4-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio is also good enough for 12th in the league through games played on Sunday.

If Posh develops a jumper, lookout.

A few times he brings out a leaning 15 ft jumper that he nails after stopping on a dime a la David Cain.

That could be a beautiful weapon.

So far it reminds me more of throwing darts at a dartboard, but I'm sure he can work on his shot. I love the steals, but to me the rest of his game needs a LOT of work.

I don’t think he’s as bad of a shooter as people think. He’s had games where he’s gone off for a bunch of threes. He just really doesn’t look for it and it isn’t his number 1 weapon. The kid has already gotten a ton better. His breakneck pace in the Georgetown game was incredible, and it’s what we need from him. It’s a tough spot to be in, as a freshman PG starting in the big East but he’s handled it about as well as possible. Nice accolade and can’t wait to see him keep growing his skill set. Easy to find his shortcoming right now, but he’s in a tough spot and doing quite well. Right now he’s #1 in steals, #7 in assists, # 15 in FT’s and #12 in A/TO.

Does Posh owe you money? :)

Imo, he has done quite well adjusting to perhaps the most difficult position to master out of the gate. CMA will refine his game, decision making, but I am happy he is getting big minutes. To me it is all about building for next year and he will be a key part of that.

He was relentless last night. I watched him a few times last year and that was OSL Posh. He just never stops. Punishing people.

Wusu actually has the bigger adjustment. He went from being heavier and stronger than his HS opponent to now being asked to match up w guys older and bigger than him. Wusu hasn’t scored as much but he’s doing a lot of winning things. He’s earning his minutes

There's no doubt that he is an absolutely relentless pest. It's actually laugh out loud funny watching him harass the daylights out of people. He also played tough D against Blair, who is a solid BE guard.

But at the moment he isn't even as good a shooter as Dunn (which is saying something), he still tries to take it to the rim when he shouldn't, I have yet to see a drive-and-kick or even much of a drive-and-dish game from him, he dribbles way too much in traffic trying to make something happen, and he always seems on the verge of losing control of the dribble.

I fully expect all of those things to improve with time, experience and coaching.

Like Not an alum, I like Wusu's prospects for growth also. He has some of the same issue as Posh - learning what he can and can't get away with at this level, and improving his game.

If they both follow Champagnie's arc under this staff, the future is bright for them both.

Posh and Dunn are exactly the same as shooters at this stage. The difference is Dunn has 3-4 years on Posh. And Posh is much more likely to actually make a layup when driving the lane. Even using Dunn's % from last year 38% and 22% to Posh's 49% to 23%.

I know you're conservative and weren't ready to chip in on the Posh statue but I think you're being a tad bit unrealistic in your expectations for a 3/4 star PG starting from Day 1 on a bottom half BE team. And also you're grossly overrated Dunn but that's another thread because we don't want the thread police to come calling ;)
