My brother in law and I had the fortune of sitting next to Gus at last nights game at CA and I have to say he is a wonderful person! He spoke at some length of his time with Joe Lapchick and the NIT championships he won in 43, 44, and 59. He also mentioned that Dick McGuire was arguably the best guard St Johns ever had! He could not say enough about McGuire! My only regret was that I did not realize it was Gus until the last 10 minutes of the game! I could have talked to him all night! We actually left the game friends this is the type of man he is!
What a treat!!!!!

Gus ran a camp for years in Syosset maybe. When my kids were teens we called to inquire about the camp. Gus called us back and spoke for 15 to 20.minutes about his camp and approach. It was clear with so many questionable people involved in competitive youth sports that Gus is a great guy. It was a little too far to consider but I wish we had.

Camp is still going strong, and agree Gus is a great guy. Author of two books, one a Joe Lapchick biography, the other about coaching St. Anthony's HS to state championships and LI HS basketball in general.

Saw the thread in the regular forum but it didn't allow me to reply. I went to his camp and played at St.Anthony's. He is a class act and never once referred to his own storied career while teaching us. If you grew up in Suffolk Cty and played basketball St. Anthony's was your dream school.

I agree! At the time he never once referred to himself as a former player, or even as a CHSAA HS coach. I was completely unaware at the time, but was certainly impressed with his sincerity and warmth.

HHS Class of 1974 here. I've previously posted this photo from my yearbook. I knew nothing of his fame at St. John's and as others have said he never mentioned it. My last name is Carr so hence the nickname of "Austin".
