I am curious as to others opinions on what makes for Great Recruiting in College Basketball ? While the usual Teams, I.e. Duke , NC, Kansas, Mich State , Michigan , etc all do well year in and year out , how do BE teams compete with them in getting top 100 players ? Nova is obviously on a roll of late but, otherwise it seems St John’s and others have had tough going over the last 20 years or so .. As a aside , I am looking at issues beyond who our Coach was at a particular time .. Thought it would be interesting to get some comments ..

Professional prospects
Chance of winning
Opportunity for playing time

The cynic in me also thinks immediate economic prospects
It’s a double knit world, baby
And your heart is my goal
I’ll pick the lock
With my pet rock
To get to your bell bottom soul

Today many on the younger kids look to the NBA prospects they'd have by playing at the school and whether the school produces guys who are in league.

Good point, Chris. I think it's that lineage of guys from the likes of KY NC Kansas Duke, et al, that were high NBA draft picks and/or 1st round picks and cashed in on NBA$$$'s. Top college prospects are captivated by NBA dreams and those schools have proved a pipeline to the NBA. Tough to beat that lure.
Facilities, boosters, pretty campuses, coeds, Hall of Fame coaches add to that for sure, but it's that pipeline to the NBA that sells their commitments to these schools imo.

All these previous comments have merit and it’s a tough job to get the Top 100 prospect to come to your school . These are the difficulties that present obstacles to climbing higher in the tiers of our League and competing with other programs . Coach Anderson seems to know this and looks to build a Team with Players that will fit his style of Play . He certainly has brought a Energy to our Program very quickly . Almost from Day 1 .

In terms of 5 star top 25-30 recruits, the bluebloods like Duke, UNC, Kentucky & Kansas (with a couple of others) will always have a huge advantage because of name recognition/reputation, perceived pipeline to the NBA and the fact that they are usually in the conversation as a national championship contender.
However when it comes to 4 star players including top 100 ranked recruits the Big East does just fine. I am copying Adam's post from another thread below as evidence of that. I agree that MA and his excellent staff can get us right in the thick of the other BE teams from a recruiting perspective in a couple of years which would be great.

The Big East is doing an amazing job.

2020 Top 200 Rankings via 247 Composite:
#50 Xavier (Dwon Odom)
#70 UConn (Andre Jackson)
#74 Marquette (Osasere Ighodaro)
#75 Creighton (Ryan Kalkbrenner)
#76 Marquette (Justin Lewis)
#83 Georgetown (Terrance Williams)
#92 Xavier (C.J. Wilcher)
#109 Butler (Myles Tate)
#131 Colby Jones (Xavier)
#137 Scooby Johnson (Butler)
#149 Butler (Chuck Harris)
#152 St. John's (Posh Alexander)
#187 Seton Hall (Dimingus Stevens)
#199 Seton Hall (Jahari Long)

Note: this is for high school athletes only. The JUCO list should release later, though it is often only a dozen or so players.

2020 Team Rankings via 247 Composite:
#6 Xavier
#11 Butler
#18 Marquette
#34 Seton Hall
#47 UConn
#48 Creighton
#50 Georgetown
#56 St. John's
#71 Providence

The coach has to create an environment where every prospective team member feels they will be accepted as equals by the current team when they arrive on campus Day 1, The coaches and established teammates must be positive, supportive and encouraging at all times.
