1. The cost of the buyout plus name coach would have likely exceeded $11M over the next 2 seasons (mullin’s $4.2M plus $5M new coach salary over the remaining 2 years of Mullin payments plus new coach’s buyout, call it $2M+/-).

2. Contrary to reports on Redmen.com no big money alum(s) stepped up to assist funding the position

3. StJohn’s is not prepared to pay $11M over the next 2 seasons.

4. Mike Cragg found himself in the position of playing the cards dealt him and will hire the best coach which StJohn’s is prepared to pay..

So yeah, you are correct, St.John’s is settling, but it is wrong to believe that it is Cragg’s fault.

Even if he were the choice of the donors, and the board was willing to sign off on it, he's holding out for way bigger fish than St. John's. I'm thinking Duke, UNC, or Kentucky are the only jobs that get his attention.

The money people only want to spring for their guys, and board doesn't want to sign off on one of them. So that leaves us with a guy that the board will sign on for but won't pay big bucks for. Hopefully they pay the assistants well. I don't think Borman comes here for a lowball offer. I would have hoped that Cragg would have reached out to Odom or Rhoads and convinced the donors that this was the smartest move. Don't think that happened. Wouldn't be shocked to see Cragg look for a new gig soon. Then we can go back to the no-AD model that was clearly so successful for us in past.

Don't know if you were asking the question, but I don't blame him for the position he's in.

Hypothetically speaking, and I'll preface this by saying I don't know all the names on the list, however, there could have been someone list that is an up and coming coach we could have gotten on the "cheap"? No need to respond, I know it all behind us now, just more frustration on my part.

Am I mistaken or is this a common theme?

If you talk to former players, including some "big names," they'll tell you you're not mistaken. Sadly, it is a common theme.

That's sad and must be corrected.
Hopefully, Cragg leads that effort once we hire a new HC.

Please identify who these “money people” and “donors” are.

I have been told by a source I deem reliable that no big money stepped up to pay the $11M required over the next 2 years to hire the big time coach most on this board desires.

If Cragg had faced this situation at Duke the “money people” and “donors” would not have been a problem but it is a real issue at StJohns.

You may 'know' something, but why would Cragg leave St. John's 1-2 years into his new AD spot at a high-major school?
I can see him leaving, once successful here, for greener pastures, but not until then.
But I know nothing.

Was told St. John's board of trustees met this afternoon. Could be some clarity on the opening today ... #sjubb

Could be to finalize a package for a big name or to discuss Pitino findings from the NCAA. Just a guess but...the mystery candidate is probably someone settled in their job who has some sort of a connection to Cragg he is going to leverage.

Personally I like the way this search has gone so far. Mullin resigning caught him off guard but Cragg is taking his time and talking to a lot of names. Clearly putting a $ amount on each name so we’re not overpaying but maximizing our investment. It’s nerve racking but should be worth it in the end.

I think this search is over by next Friday. Heard through the grapevine there will be more interviews next week. I don’t think we hire TC. It would have happened already if we were interested.
