I don’t judge players on numbers or what their teammates do or don’t do. I am not here to dump on Ponds so my last word, I look at him as a vastly underachieving player; not statistically but in maximizing his abilities to make his team better on both ends of the floor.

I think Ponds is one of those guys that is so subtle and intentionally understated that he's spent his life being underestimated. He realizes this and thrives on it and doesn't try to be prototypical including outward shows of things that you want to see (as a coach) like enthusiasm in various forms. So he is going to fail eye tests where other guys who have different personalities will be overrated for the same/inverse reason. When I was first really impressed with Ponds was watching him off the floor in a high school all star game. While other kids were hooting and enthusiastic, he was really serious and studying the other players.. Both are great but most people don't and can't appreciate people like that.

Paul maybe the 2 greatest players to ever suit up here, Malik and Chris, were both very non-demonstrative and understated types of players. To the best of my knowledge, no one ever questioned their effort. They came to play game in and game out, and for 40 minutes, and without fanfare. I think the time is long past to criticize Shamorie, since the season and his playing career here are over. I wish him the best, just as I do any kid embarking on a new phase in life. However, most of us have been watching and/or playing basketball long enough to tell the difference between a kid who came to play, and a kid who is going through the motions. And it has nothing to do with personality or style. I'm no mind reader so I have no clue what's going on inside a kid's head, but I have 2 eyes and can damn well tell what's going on with a kid on the court, and whether or not he's giving it his all.

Good post and one that makes me wish I had stuck to my guns when telling Paul Massell I was not going to post on the subject anymore only to go into more detail of my opinion of Ponds as a player. And it is only that, an opinion with all the subjectivity associated with opinions. Certainly I wish him the best of fortune going forward.

Yea, except you slammed his effort and character. Zaun called him "low basketball iq".

You guys usually reserve your character judgments for posters and coaches. What you are both implying is the type if stuff that I thought went out in the 70s where certain players were gifted but lazy and others were hard working and smart players but not as athletic.

You will scream bloody murder but these depictions come from.s very bad place and those judgments very carefully imparted, if ever.

. Good Post , Beast ... I often wonder if many of the Critics on these posts are Alums of the School as we are ? If you’re a Fan but , not a Alum , I think it’s a different perspective ... And , while one’s opinion is their’s alone , it just seems to me a lot of Posters throw way too many Cheap Shots and Personal insults around , like it’s their right . When I was a Student in the late 60’s and Season Ticket Holder in the 80’s , loyalty to the Team and School were much more evident . Shame it hasn’t continued .

He's immensely talented, but it's still going to take a lot of luck -- there are a ton of talented guys who never make it. One thing he can control is changing his diet and weight room habits, though.

Hopefully he goes to a coach who will get the very best out of him instead of burying him for a few years and letting him drift off to Europe.

I'm alum Sly and Ponds is currently on the background of my iPhone just to give you insight on how I don't "hate him" or anything ridiculous like that. My point of contention is that as fans we 100% have the right to be critical. This isn't a safe space. It's the real world. I just don't appreciate when others on the board try to tell other posters what they can and cannot post outside of obviously trolling or hateful/expletive rhetoric. You need to remember that as fans people pay thousands. It's not just for fun in the pee wee league. I will be rooting for Ponds as hard as anyone in the draft!

Because there are far too many losers out there hiding behind their keyboards. Shamorie put this team on his back day in and day out. Yes they came up short, but this kid balled out for us and wanted to win every time he stepped foot on that floor. He owes us nothing. We were the most relevant we've been in a while thanks to him. Hope he does well for himself in the draft and in the NBA.

Funny how losers on here bash him. One poster in particular just bringing up the fact that as fans people pay thousands? Pretty sure that's the same guy who didn't even pony up cash for tickets to get into the Nova game...irony.

I'm not hiding, apparently you weren't at the meetup I helped organize (technically several). If you must know, I spent over $500 out of my pocket to help get fans out and give back. Didn't want to spend another $200+ on tickets when I was right across the street at a bar to watch. That's my choice and I'll spend it how I want. Being on this board really desensitizes people sometimes and has people acting totally different than they would in real life. I haven't said anything probably in over 5 years on here that I wouldn't say in person. Maybe you're just disgruntled you missed out on the free wings ;)

. Glad to hear you identify as a Alum , Mike . While I have disagreed with some of your posts , I don’t throw F bombs or insulting comments your way . But, we know who do .... I just feel anything less than positive about Ponds is insulting to the play he gave us for 3 years , without a talented team around him . He is , without a doubt , the best Player to wear the Uniform in 20 years . The criticism that was thrown at Mullin on this site was awful! Impugning his character , family and ability to Coach . I believe Mullin got as much out of this Roster that was possible . Many will likely disagree and that’s their opinion . Several of our Players , not Ponds , did not play as expected . It cost us several games . That’s the difference between finishing 3rd in the BE instead of 7th.

I can't get on guys who give their all and just don't have the talent. Ponds is the opposite. He has all of the talent in the world, but just never seemed interested in committing. Extremely frustrating to watch play out. I believe I mentioned before, but he lack of effort and urgency made it appear like he had already signed a pro contract. Very puzzling.

Like I mentioned once before, it was no secret on campus that Ponds spent more time at McDonalds than on the practice floor. That is why he was completely GASSED the last month of the season.

. McDonald’s has tried hard to make their Menu more Health oriented and thus has contributed to their higher Earnings as reported yesterday ., Ponds was a Trained , in Shape Player tasked with doing everything for the Team , except hand out the Towels and shut off the lights in the Gym. He was a great Player for St John’s and it’s doubtful a few Big Macs hampered his performance . He played nearly 38 minutes a game all Season , rarely took a play off on the Court and if he wasn’t our Superman for the last 3 Years , he was pretty close . Hands down , Shamorie Ponds was our Best Player in the last 20 Years ! Applaud the Player he was . We may not see his like for a long time .

Once again, Ponds was a lazy whiner who thought he didn’t need to practice hard and spent more time eating Big Macs instead. Just another kid listening to all the fools sorrounding him instead of working on his game. No doubt he had the talent to play in the NBA, too bad he is going to be playing in Europe for peanuts out of shear laziness. And I’ll take Artest and Barkley over him every day of the week!
