SJU press release

QUEENS, N.Y. – Certainly no strangers to lacing up their sneakers in the most famed of NBA arenas, the Johnnies will have the opportunity to play inside the brand new Chase Center in San Francisco when the Red Storm takes on Arizona in the Al Attles Classic on Dec. 21.

The event, which will be held at the brand new home of the Golden State Warriors, will honor longtime Warriors player, coach and general manager Al Attles, a New Jersey native. The affair will be hosted by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, which presented Attles with its John W. Bunn Liftetime Achievement Award in 2014 and will enshrine him in the class of 2019 this September.

"We are excited for the opportunity to participate in the Basketball Hall of Fame's Al Attles Classic at the brand new Chase Center in San Francisco," said St. John's Head Coach Mike Anderson. "It'll be a first-class event held at a state-of-the-art venue that will challenge our team prior to the conference season. It's also an honor to help recognize the legacy of a man who has contributed so much to our game in Al Attles."

St. John's has played in at least one event hosted by the Basketball Hall of Fame in all but one season since 2015-16. Last December, the Red Storm erased a 16-point second half deficit to topple Georgia Tech, 76-73, in the Hoophall Miami Invitational. Shamorie Ponds scored 21 of his season-high 37 points in the second half of that come-from-behind triumph.

"We're very excited to be launching a new collegiate event in the Bay Area, home to many Hall of Famers, including the remarkable Al Attles," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame. "Chase Center is a world-class venue in a tremendous basketball community, and we expect many fans will make the trip to enjoy its amenities and support their universities this holiday season. To have a quadruple-header featuring three Bay Area teams will be a real treat."

St. John's will play Arizona for just the second time in the history of the two programs. Their lone meeting came in the semifinal game of the 2011 2K Sports Classic held at Madison Square Garden. Despite a near double-double from freshman Moe Harkless, the Johnnies fell to the No. 15/16 Wildcats, 81-72, in that contest.

Game time, ticket information and television broadcast details will be released at a later date.

Maybe we can get a HOF'er or two to give the team a pre game motivational speech.

It certainly matters who you play. When you play teams like Arizona, Virginia (most likely), etc. your brand is associated with that tier if it happens regularly. This is why I was so disappointed with last year's pathetic schedule. It seemed like we played 95% no names and I didn't want to be associated with them. Of course the way scheduling works in major conferences you need some cupcakes to fill it out, but we need to keep scheduling like this and Cragg knows it thankfully. Arizona and Virginia are going to be near impossible to beat in a rebuilding year for us but you never know. I like scheduling big brands that are good but not world beaters like Texas or Florida. Just seeing the SJ logo next to those logos will raise profile and awareness among casual fans. I just hope we don't get embarrassed in those games I mentioned.
