Maybe this “small ball model” is risky and necessitates great shooting, concentration and fierce gang rebounding to work.

Maybe staff put together a thin, risk laden roster that is vulnerable to foul problems, exhaustion & injuries.

Maybe half court creative, changing defenses confuse SJU and negate our athleticism.

Maybe this team lacks depth to win on successive nights in BE Tourney because of thin roster and marginal talent on bench.

Maybe SJU squeaks into Dance only to be abused by a team on the interior like Gonzaga did years ago.

Maybe I am letting my frustration get to me. :)

I agree with everything above. Small ball can work, think back to the Nova championship team 3 years ago. But that team crashed the boards. Something this team is unwilling or unable to do.

I'd say 300th in rebounding margin (-3 a game) supports your proposition soundly. Looked to me like Roberts would have led the team in rebounding if he only played 20 minutes a game before fouling out. The only guy on the roster to really go after boards with aggression and passion.

Message boards are a funny place after a tough loss. Just after this game alone, 3 different fans had an impulse and started a new topic to share their feelings. Jeez, just take a step back and breathe!

I now realize I’ve been wrong about this team.
We’re not as good as I thought we were.
St. John’s is not disciplined, gritty, or prepared for changing game dynamics, and we don’t execute, I.e., finish our drives.
I’ll root like hell for us down the stretch, but only Dr. Pangloss could envision we dance this year.

Had a friend who used to say rebounding is a mentality.

I continue to believe that one of our major problems is the way we play defense. Instead of working hard (like most teams) to play good fundamental man defense and being responsible for your own man, we switch on everything. The problem that it causes is that we often end up with mismatches - either one of our bigs on one of their smalls or visa versa. In the first case, our big can't stay with the small and the little guy blows past our big guy. In the second case, our small can't stop their big inside. These "mismatches" create opportunities for:
1. easy baskets by our opponents
2. us to commit a lot of unnecessary fouls
3. easy offensive rebounds by our opponents on missed shots
Maybe we play this way because we have a paper thin bench and, since the starters log a lot of minutes, it's less taxing to play this way. But, having watched it all season to date, I'm convinced that it doesn't work.

Also the kick out 3s. Prov. did it to perfection. Ponds switches to a big, help comes to double team, Friars big sees the floor easily over his 2 smaller defenders, and kicks out to a wide open man who hits the 3.

We are more than halfway thru the season and it is quite evident that the Big East is just not that good. Our first place team Villanova is a shadow of what it was last year and the rest of the league is just mediocre. How Marquette is ranked in the top 15 befuddles me. I mean after all we beat them twice and we are not a very good team. Because of this mediocrity the league is cannabilizing itself where a team like St John’s May get a bid with a 500 record or may not. My fear is that it is very likely that the Big East will get only 3 teams to the big dance maybe 4 if we are lucky! I still think we can end up 10-8 because of our favorable schedule, but there is no room for error! When I look at the play of many of the schools in the Power 5 conferences our league looks like the junior varsity! I believe that the league will not bode well come tournament time! Geez I hope I am wrong!

This one hurts. Think this is a quad 3 loss. Clark has completely lost his mojo after his foul fest 1st half of Duke. Only so much Ponds can do. Not sure why some people are knocking him on here. He is having to play one on 5. Especially today with no Heron and no one looking capable of creating offense. Also, these noon games suck. WE are 1-3 at noon.

Fans live & die with their team and we've all died many times with our Johnnies, but we don't quit. At least most of us don't.
