Unless Heron really steps it up, he will go undrafted should he make himself available. Should Ponds not return for his senior year, Heron would be the man next season. It's silly to speculate as to next year's roster, which we've been doing since before THIS season. So much can happen that it makes no sense.

So, the question is, would he opt to go pro overseas, or return for his senior year to give it one final regular try to play himself into the NBA's cross hairs?
I don't know the answer, but he 'could' return.

The way I see it, he is a smart kid. He will probably graduate this spring, and opt to go through the G League to make his way into the NBA if he doesn't get drafted. With so few seniors being drafted every year, not sure it makes sense for him to stay another year of being drafted is his goal.

Interesting thought, Room112, but he’s only a junior academically. I do not know if he has accrued extra credits to be able to graduate with what he could also earn over the Summer.
The kid has said that graduating is important to him.
We shall see.

NCJohnnie wrote: Regarding Mustapha, still way too early in the year to definitively determine his draft prospects. Would anyone have guessed at the beginning of last year's BE season that Nova would have 4 guys go in the first 32 picks? If Johnnies have a great year, make some noise in the Dance and Heron & Ponds both shine they could easily both go in the first 2 rounds. If Mustapha is not going to get drafted, will just be a question of whether he's decided he's leaving to play professionally, whatever that means. Only those closest to him would know the answer to that one. Time will tell.

You make great points, NCJ.
Mustapha could blow up and with Ponds, lead us deep into the Dance, dramatically lifting his game and NBA prospects.
Happy endings all around!
We shall see.

FYI, Chris Mullin was on the Ryen Russilo’s podcast this week. For those who don’t know Ryen is a huge St. John’s fan and my personal favorite espn radio personality. His radio show is gone but his podcast is great. Really enjoyed the interview.

Amase. would you mind posting the link to that podcast with the Mullin interview? I'd like to listen to it if I can figure out how to. Thanks.

Remember earlier this year when many on this board were so jealous that UConn had Hurley and we didnt? Especially after their third game and they beat Syracuse. Those people have been pretty quiet lately.

That was never going to be a quick rebuilding job. Hurley deserves a pass for this year, and next year, IMO.

Year 3 is when I think it will come to fruition for them. Maybe not to the level they were at under Jim Calhoun, but they should be a good team by that point.

I'm not sure he'd go in a 3 round draft this year at this point. No disrespect intended. For guys like Heron, teams want finished products. He came into the season needing to show that he can create, but he hasn't done that at all. He has become very predictable and those charges are unacceptable for NBA teams. The silly fouls too are a bad look. And his stats aren't great.

He needs another year. I think he could be a late first rounder if he fixes some flaws and shows he can be the man.

The NBA is not kind to players that don't possess freakish physical attributes that try to make the league from avenues other than college.

There is plenty of time to impress though, and he is very fortunate the roles now allow him to hire an agent and go through a very detailed process.
