Hmm. That should be interesting.

Umm, does one game make an average? ;)

They do return their top 3, and one of those 6'10 guys did average a double double last year. The other returning big didn't really contribute last year or Tuesday night. A 6'11" frosh pulled down 9 boards in 15 minutes though, and the other 10 rebound guy didn't play a lot his first two years.

Big qualifier, though. They were playing a D2 school no one has ever heard of with only 1 player over 6'7" on the roster and he only played 3 minutes in the game.

We got out rebounded in our first game by a smaller and less talented team. Rebounding is going to continue to be a problem until it is not.

I'm hopeful that rebounding will be less of a problem the more we play. I think we have the horses to swipe at the ball and generally harass for 80+ feet if we commit to it. But Marvin will be a big key as to whether it even gets that far. He's got the muscle. Just need to develop the nose.

I don’t generally comment on our recruiting but how do these guys have 2 6’10” guys who contribute and we don’t even have one?

It will be a good test to play a middle of the pack mid-major with a lot of height and bulk. If rebounding is a big problem against these guys, and by that I mean getting significantly outrebounded, we'll likely have our work cut out for us there all year.

In both games so far, there have been 2 or 3 instances where our players were actually fighting with each other for rebounds. As long as nothing dumb comes out of that, like loss of possession, I took it as a good sign. It means that our guys are crashing the boards hard. That's all you can ask for, IMO.

Different recruiting model, I suspect. Matt sits in a crowded gym during the summer and offers big kids who will 101 times out of 100 opt for Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan State, etc. Whereas I think a lot of these mid-majors stumble upon these big kids during the season or at non-famous local camps.

And a good portion of them seem to be guys with no muscle definition, but only the mid-majors seem to grasp that there are farm muscles hidden under there and the kid will be a load to move from under the basket. Xavier seems to do a good job mixing recruiting styles -- land guards and small forwards who are on the national radar, and then fill in with these big hosses that kill you when given the chance to develop.

I have no problem with the staff's apparent interest in wiry California big men, but we need to land some.

SJU press release
Bowling Green visits Queens following a 91-52 win over Division II Tiffin University to open its 2018-2019 campaign on Tuesday night. Led by fourth-year head coach Michael Huger, the Falcons finished 16-16 overall and 7-11 in the MAC last season.

The team returns its top three scorers from last year, all of whom averaged 11-plus points per game and reached double figures in their first outing of 2018-19. Junior guard Dylan Frye led the way on Tuesday with 20 points and five rebounds in that season-opening victory.

Friday’s game will be the sixth all-time matchup between the Red Storm and the Falcons in a series that dates back to 1944. Bowling Green owns a 3-2 all-time advantage against the Johnnies and last came to Queens for the 1994 Lapchick Tournament. Felipe Lopez scored a game-high 22 points for the Red Storm in that outing, a 77-64 victory.

Tuesday’s game will be the second of two campus site games for the GotPrint.com Legends Classic presented by Old Trapper. The semifinal and final rounds of the event will be held on Nov. 19 and 20 and Barclays Center in Brooklyn. St. John’s will face off with Cal in the opening game before taking on either VCU or Temple the following day.

Don't think we played Bowling Green during those years, but in the early 60's they had both the late greats Nate Thurmond and Butch Komives. Komives, whose biggest NBA claim to fame is he and Walt Bellamy were traded by Knicks to get Dave Debuschere (sp), led the NCAA in scoring in 1963-1964 with 36.7 ppg. Thurmond was one of the greatest rebounding and defensive centers in NBA history. Sadly, they have both passed away in the past 10 years.
