Rivals does not support your belief that DePaul recruited better during the recent 2018 cycle.

According to Rivals
DePaul received 2 recruits for the 2018 cycle both 3 star:
George Maslennikov 3*** , 6’8” forward
John Deiner 3*** , 6’4” guard

St. John’s received 4 recruits for the 2018 cycle including two 4 star recruits
Greg Williams. 4 **** , 6’3” guard
L.J Figuroa 4**** , 6’5” guard
Marcellus Earlington 3*** 6’6” forward
Josh Roberts 3*** 6’8” forward

That's true. I've been making the BE recruiting threads on Holy Land (as Adoraz) for the past 5 years, so I know DePaul hasn't been recruiting well and SJU has consistently out recruited them.

However, Romeo is ranked higher than any SJU player since Jordan. I'd take a player like Romeo over the high volume of players SJU has been recruiting the past couple years. Ponds was close in his ranking, but aside from him we have not been able to crack the Top 50 players. Even Top 100 has been tough. Our recruiting has been trending downwards, while the basement pf the conference is somehow trending upwards.

All I'm saying is our recruiting has gotten worse, and that's a problem.

Congrats to DePaul though. Always good to see the conference's worst team win a huge recruiting battle.

I agree with you if we we are talking about talented front court players. We lost Sima, Owens, Yakwe, Ellison, and almost every top big recruit to date. That has been a problem.
However, Ponds, Simon, Figueroa, Williams and Dixon are very high level D1 players and as good in the positions 1 through 3 than any players signed since the Lavin era.
I've said in the past that Matt is a good recruiter for the Owens, Simon, Clark, Keita, Dixon and Figueroa's of the world but has not connected well on the prep circuit with bigs especially.
As many people are saying, that is why we need a second recruiter.

I was happy with Mullin's first/second classes. We've also picked up a few good players during the last few years as you've said.

However, overall I'm concerned because I think the trend is downwards and I'm not optimistic about 2019.

Here's how 247 ranks SJU in the team rankings by year (recruits only, so no transfers):

2011: #7 <Lavin
2012: #33
2013: #88
2014: #115
2015: #26 <Mullin
2016: #24
2017: #48
2018: #55
2019: NR as no recruits yet

We are not yet in second half Lavin territory, but with another bad year on the court we would be.

The second half of the Lavin era is deceiving. Lavin held on to most of his original outstanding recruits while Mullin lost most of them earlier than expected requiring transfers who are very good players. The recruiting paradigm has changed since 2011. We are, and have been deficient at the 4 and the 5 positions for three seasons but now have the best depth at 1 through 3 in years, assuming Ponds returns. The failure has been up front and it has been difficult to compete and recover because of it. Our rebounding woes says it all.

I don't disagree. Lavin's 2013 class was ranked #88 because it was only one player, however it included the one player they needed (Jordan). The problems were with the 2014 and (cancelled) 2015 classes. I don't want to get too off topic though.

1-3 is great as you said, but there's a definite front court issue.

Jessie Govan tells me he will return to Georgetown next season. Entered 2018 NBA Draft without an agent.

Well, we want to win in as strong a BEC as possible, so at least 5 teams get to the dance and we're one of them.
IF Ponds returns and we get a Grad Big, we can compete with the best teams in the conference.
Bring it on.

Huge for them. If Akinjo can solve their PG problem than they will compete. If we both can get relevant again it will be huge. Would be the best rivalry in the Big East; Pat Ewing vs Chris Mullin. Ponds vs Govan they were the back to back NYS PoY in HS and both played in the PSAL and won state titles. As someone born and raised in Brooklyn it doesnt get much better than that. Thats why deep down we all want it to work and this season is important. This past season the first 2 games we played against them were entertaining, down to the wire, unfortunately we lost both. But we won the one that counted the most. Should be good, im going to try and go to both games next season.

Believe Ponds was beaten out for NYS POY by Virginia's Ty Jerome.

Would love to make recruiting inroads upstate, especially if Syracuse may potentially be on the downswing. Not a ton of highly rated players up there, but when they do emerge they make an impact on the college level. I never expected Huerter to be as good as he is.

Great time to get our Staff right-sized and recruiting-focused, in tandem with player-development skills, not to mention player-retention ‘love’.
