An older piece from 11/16 indicating Austin played in a Jerry Stackhouse AAU program. Vandy is apparently recruiting him FYI.

“Huntington Prep (W.Va.) has reached into Canada for “The Wizard.”

The school has added Class of 2019 point guard Austin Van Zyl, who is ranked as the No. 11 player in his class by Canadian website NorthPoleHoops.com, which reported news of Van Zyl’s transfer.

Van Zyl attended York Prep in South Carolina before moving to Huntington Prep. He also has played summer ball with the Jerry Stackhouse Elite North 16U program in the adidas Gauntlet series.

“I was a shy, polite Canadian when I first transferred into the States, but then I learned to kick people in the teeth, so to speak, to get respect,” he told NorthPoleHoops. “You got to be a dog and headhunt to earn their respect.”

Still, he concedes, “I’ve got a long way to go before I become a finished product. I got lots of time to improve while going up against top Canadian and American talent.”

A 6-4 lefty, Van Zyl is noted for his passing ability — hence the nickname — but also can be explosive. His next step in development will be getting stronger and adding weight to his lanky frame.

Marshall was the first school to offer him and he visited last weekend, but others are gaining interest.”

Kid seems like a long shot for us but would be a fabulous get for sure. Confident that our staff is out there shaking the bushes for another PG and hope something pops in the next week or so.

Indiana has been recruiting Van Syl since his Huntington Prep days, and the sites are full of 'talk' about him 'perhaps' going there and the long-time connection. Vandy was the other front-runner mentioned.
His shooting woes the past two years seem related to his injuries, a wrist injury in 2017-18 and a sports hernia last season..
He could certainly highlight his game in NYC.
Kid is a long shot and would be a huge 'get' for us.
Just great to see the Staff is out there searching.
Good job.

Are there any '19 / '20 kids making imminent commitments / visits or for whom we feel like we have a 50/50 or better chance at this point? Asking for a completely psychotic friend.

As many of us have posted, said or felt:
Are we fortunate to (finally) have a staff that
1. RECRUITS and
2. Is skilled at RECRUITING and
3. Will bring in quality RECRUITS
4.has already got RECRUITS even at late stage of the 2019 game.
wow :)

Who's the friend?

Cindy Wity Fohnny Jan. She's probably really nice in real life, but gets antsy when it's June and we have one PG.

Yes - I just spoke to Cindy again and he is quite anxious about the lack of experienced PG and thinks we're also short one experienced big. Also thinks while it's nice that we have this great staff and that they operate in stealth mode and all that, that it would be great if we started to hear some real news about '19 guys and prime '20 guys who we are in prime position for - something more concrete than posting year old articles about guys that may or may not even go to college and if they do have 20 other suitors. Cindy's a little insane if you ask me.
