SJU Professor found guilty of harassment for asking students if global trade has been good overall

In September 2020, graduate student and adjunct History professor Richard Taylor taught a lesson about the history of the “Columbian Exchange,” the transfer of biodiversity and culture resulting from 15th and 16th century transatlantic trade. After a student filed a bias complaint about Taylor’s slideshow, which provided a discussion prompt (“Do the positives justify the negatives?”), and an activist group mounted a letter-writing campaign, St. John’s investigated Taylor for “ask[ing] students to justify slavery and discuss the positives and negatives of slavery[.]” Taylor was found responsible for violating St. John’s anti-harassment policy on October 5, 2020. FIRE wrote to St. John’s, asking it to end any attempts to punish Taylor for a question that — even if accurately framed by Taylor’s critics and the investigator — would be fully protected by academic freedom.

Seems like professor was trying to show different perspectives? Should've known the times we are in...but sure his purpose was the opposite of what SJW students claim.

Learned today that it is no longer acceptable to use the term "sexual preference" as it is offensive to the LGBT community. Wish I would have gotten the memo. Guess I no longer will be able to tell my wife what I prefer, will just have to settle for pot luck. (Hope "pot luck" isn't a newly labeled offensive term).

I don't know the guy, so is it possible that the whole lesson was designed to piss off certain students, or that he is actually racist? Sure, I suppose it's possible. But even if either of those were the case, maybe students should have used critical analysis to shred the beliefs that they think he has. I say "think" because he never actually stated them. If he flat-out stated that he was pro-slavery, etc. then that's more grounds for punishment. But right now it just sounds like whiny college kids who should be using a bit more of the brains that got them to college in the first place.

I'm pretty sure you won't offend anyone unless there's a gay person in the room with you and your wife as you are expressing your preferences. And if that's the case, it doesn't sound like any of you are uptight anyway.

It's amazing to me what society "tolerates" and what they don't. A lot of hypocrisy there. And let me just say this about the theater world, there are no bigger hypocrites anywhere on the face of this planet. Some of them are some of the most judgmental and intolerant people that I have ever met.

In just a few hours, Websters dictionary changed the definition to include the words "offensive" , seriously.

Found the story here:

Sounds like the professor had a slight lapse of judgement by today's standards, but clearly his intent was to have his students think critically about the different perspectives of the terrible topic. Merely discussing different POV's from a historic sense does not equate to condoning it personally. We are in a period of hysteria and witch hunts, many of which are based on complete fabrication or at best, misunderstanding. Today in America, the more feigned outrage you show, the more virtuous you are. It's crazy, because just the opposite is true.
