since this section of the board has a variety of topics and a lot of wonderfully diverse opinions, I was surprised there was no discussion of movies/oscars.

The finalists were announced yesterday and would enjoy hearing opinions. Do you favor The Irishman, 1917, Once Upon a Time ...In Hollywood, Little Women, etc. I have seen a number of the finalists and still have a few more to view before picking my 2019 favorite. Not on the list for best picture (understandably) but enjoyable film entertainment if you like mysteries that keep you guessing--Knives Out and dramas based on true stories Bombshell and Just Mercy.

I feel like I've seen less movies this year than in others and haven't kept up with what is up for what awards, but "Parasite" was probably the best movie I've seen in theaters this year. Saw the new Almodóvar movie last night. Enjoyed it a lot.

I think that the biggest mistake the Academy made this year, was nominating Toy Story 4 for best animated feature, while leaving out Frozen 2. Frozen 2 was a far superior film, IMO.

Saw parasite this past week and was blown away. Also saw 1917 a couple weeks ago and thought it was great. If one of those two win best film I will be happy.

As for the Toy Story and Frozen 2 comment I saw above, I strongly disagree.

I grew up on the toy story movies and a lot of people seem to think 4 was not a worthy entry in the series. I actually disagree. The movie itself was extremely fun and well paced. On top of that, I really liked the message of that film. I thought it was a lot more powerful than frozen 2. Toy story 4 dealt with a lot of mature themes like self worth, finding your purpose, etc.

As a senior in college who doesn’t really know where he’s going after graduation in terms of career, that film totally struck a chord with me and the way it handled characters who felt lost in a way but found their purpose.

That’s probably too much of a deep dive into a toy story film, but yea, I loved it

We saw Parasite a couple weeks ago and loved it. That and once upon a time in Hollywood were my 2 favorites this year. Loved the Irishman too but these 2 better

My main issue with Toy Story 4, is that I felt it was totally unnecessary. One of the things I liked about #3, was that I felt it ended the saga effectively. This one just felt like a pointless add-on, IMO. It wasn't bad, per say, but didn't add anything to the saga, IMO. I've always been a bit of a contrarian on the Toy Story films, though. 2 and 4 were the two movies that everyone praised, but that I thought were just OK. OTOH, I think that 1 and 3 are classics, where the reviews on them were solid, but not spectacular.

Frozen 2 was not as good as the original, but I liked the story. It lacked the killer musical number that the first one had, but this was more about story, and Elsa's character (who I find easy to sympathize with), and I just plain bought it, more then I did Toy Story. Frankly, it's the first thing I've seen Disney do right with Frozen since the first film came out, since the Broadway musical, and the EPCOT ride, both left quite a bit to be desired, IMO.

I realize that this movie might resonate more to people with certain "hobbies", and that Sandler might have some preconceived notions with his work.... but Uncut Gems was as an exhilarating time I've had in a theatre since high school. The music that accompanied the scenes was very well placed. They way it was shot felt real.

There was hardly a let down the whole movie. Highly recommend for those who haven't seen it. (saw 1917 shortly after, and that was just truly impressive film making. the whole one scene shot aspect- real cool)

I hated that movie. I understand the Safdie brothers go for that type of anxiety inducing filmmaking, but god that movie gave me a headache.

Sandler’s character, I just wanted him to shut tf up for the entirety of the movie. So much yelling. So much pointless yelling. Best part of the movie was his mistress, the actress who played her had a real breakthrough performance I thought.

I just personally thought it was a great epilogue of sorts to the original trilogy. When I saw the movie in theaters, my parents and sisters who went with me said what you said, the movie didn’t feel “important” enough or it didn’t have enough weight to it in a way.

I totally get that, I actually think toy story 4 should have been branded as a Woody spin off film and not an actual follow up to 3.

But at the same time, as I said before, I think the film had a lot more weight to it than people give it credit. Some may find it silly, but I really found it profound how (SPOILER) Woody realized how blessed he’s been to have kids his whole life, and found a new purpose giving other toys that feeling as much as he could.

It was a worthy follow up to 3. He said his goodbyes to Andy and found a new kid, but then came to the realization that maybe it was time to help others find that purpose in their lives and feel what he’s felt for so long.

To me that’s a brave choice for Pixar to make after they wrapped everything up with a bow on it in 3. It made the characters like woody feel more alive than ever even though they are toys.

Apologies if my posts are really long I just really love talking about movies and Toy Story 4 was fantastic to me.
