Every player gets "registered" into specific classes with the guidance of their advisor in the Fall. The point of the matter is that Mullin apparently is running a loose ship and someone on the staff should be following up to make sure players actually are attending classes. Unless this is a typical St. John's cover-up, whether they use the term enrolled, registered or whatever, he should not have maintained any scholarship benefits per NCAA guidelines if in fact he was no longer a student after that grace period which is meant for those who attended a class and chose to drop it while maintaining other classes. He would have crashed longer had Mullin not been apprised and made to look a tool of his game. After this took place he was denied access to the player's training facilities and the use of the trainers to "rehabilitate" which, to my knowledge, he was not doing to begin with. This expedited his departure. There are players on the team who knew exactly what he was doing so his deceptive influence could have been costly. Matt and the advisor should have been on top of this and they weren't. I'm sure some rural fans observing the program from their dens reading this forum on their IPad may have better information about the situation so I will wait for their 24 hour delayed opinions for confirmation.

Always respect your opinion and I'm always grateful for your posts and insights, @Class of 72, but I think you're making a lot of assumptions. You stated,

"The point of the matter is that Mullin apparently is running a loose ship and someone on the staff should be following up to make sure players actually are attending classes."

The staff cannot make anyone attend classes. They can advise, cajole, encourage, beg, plead, heck - fill in your favorite verb from the "ask" family - but they can't "make". From your post, it appears to me that you're jumping to the conclusion that they didn't even try. It could very well be that they advised Marcus every single day of the need to attend class, and further advised him every single day that if he did not, that as of a certain date, he would no longer be eligible to even sit on the bench. Since the staff undoubtedly knows the eligibility rules far better that most of us ever could, it's more likely than not that they had ongoing discussions close to daily with Marcus advising him on how he was jeopardizing his status and exactly when he would hit the point of no return.

    You state further along:

"Matt and the advisor should have been on top of this and they weren't."

While again, you may be completely correct, it seems inconceivable to me that they (Coach Mullin, Matt, the AD, St. Jean, the academic advisors, everyone) weren't discussing Marcus's status virtually every day. Heck, WE were discussing his status every day, how would it be possible that that they weren't as well? Particularly when it was regarding a player with Marcus's potential?

  • Using Yawke To Avoid Foul Trouble

I know things are going well, and part of the reason is that AA and Yawke aren't seeing action but I think Mullin needs to find a way to sneak Yawke in a few minutes each game. Clark and Owens are flirting with foul trouble nearly every game. Mullin should take advantage of the TV timeouts, when possible, and get Yawke in on a few defensive possessions before the timeout occurs. It could end up saving a foul and effect the game later on. Of course if the ball does make it to the offensive end with him out there, one simple instruction, 'Don't touch the ball, no matter what'.

I saw the 'Can't Reply' thread and I have the same issue, can't reply but I can start a thread. I've deleted cookies, logged in and out, still can't add a reply, any other suggestions?
