To the surprise of many 7 1 Thon Maker of Virginia, by way of Australia and Sudan, the number 1 player in the class of 2016, has decided to move to Canada and complete his high school at a new Canadian basketball academy in the suburbs of Toronto called Athletes Institute. Apparently a very wealthy man in the area was tired of the countries top talent leaving to go south of the border to prep schools , Andrew Wiggins , Tyler Ennis, Anthony Bennett to name a few of late. With him came his younger brother Matur who is a top recruit for the class of 2018. The team will benefit from great coaching and facilities and will travel to the States often in order to play top flight talent.
We will see how this academy plays out.

I guess I never cared enough about him to realize this was a possibility. His natural class was last year's seniors? Or is there some obscure rule I'm not familiar with?

He probably saw how Diallo's freshman year went and didnt want to take a chance of hurting his draft position.

I think that sums it up perfectly.
No more pipe dreams for this season as Rawle and Thon are going elsewhere.
Love the 6 new kids we are adding ( hopefully Williams will be healthy and can contribute ) and lets see who else the staff can add.
Would love the Greek kid and hopefully he can redshirt a season.

He graduated with his class or finished his required courses last year. NBA still has to rule on his eligibility. Usually the player does the one year in college or in the case of Emmanuel Mudiay graduated and then went overseas. This could open up a new ballgame for some.

Per Zagoria
"Was told St. John's saw the Thon Maker news coming a while back. No Thon or Rawle but will be in the mix for transfers."

Good article on him:

One snippet:
Maker, who did complete the measurable assessments at the combine, set records for men 6-11 and over in the standing and max vertical. He was near the top among big men in the three-quarter sprint drill and shuttle run.
