Freshman of the Year
Shamorie Ponds, St. John's

St. John's needs offense. Ponds gets wet. His stroke is great, and he'll be asked to pour it in for the Red Storm. You look around the Big East, and right now not a lot of teams need their freshmen to put up numbers. The Johnnies are an exception. He should have a big year and set up a critical third season, a year from now, for Chris Mullin in Queens.

Isn't Lovett eligible for this as well?

Apparently not

Isn't Lovett a Sophmore? How many years of eligibility remain?

Don't sleep on Shamorie Ponds. He plays very relaxed so his quick hands on defense and his smooth stroke and passing skills sometimes will go unnoticed. Even if he doesn't score a ton, his presence will help the team.

Among other skills he is very adept at deflecting passes and generating turnovers.

Interesting guard matchups in BE play:

Depaul - major size disparity
Marquette - similar - passing lanes, steals/turnovers
Creighton - a real quality test
Xavier - vs PG by committee
Chuck Norris once fought superman. The loser had to wear his underwear over his pants.

Nothing specific, just reflective of my gut feeling that he & his father will want to get paid to play before four year period is up. Hopefully I am wrong.

Thanks. On paper he could be interesting case where NBA aspirations actually helps us in him sticking around longer. Certainly he'll be able to earn somewhere before 4 years, maybe even at NBA level. But at his size, in addition to natural strengths of speed/handle/playmaking, he'll need to be knockdown shooter from NBA distance, lockdown on ball defender, consummate floor general, and get stronger. Most if not all of those things take time and work, so could be case where longer collegiate career, including hopefully a lot of team winning, could greatly improve his overall pro profile.
