Also all of this critique even anger...how does it help the staff, the program, the fans, we posters and our BP. Just seems to be counterproductive AND it’s the easy way out: solutions outweigh complaints. Solutions take more talent, astuteness than complaints. And for those who hint at “ Mullin must go” I ask - to be replaced by who/whom...give me a viable alternative to the current staff.

I wouldn't call it anger...maybe prolonged disappointment. I hope Mullin is here for a while because that would mean that we make the tournament next year and likely better after that. He's the perfect figurehead for our program. If next year does not work (just to clarify not trying to be repetitive) I don't think it ever will with him at the helm. I believe Mullin had the talent to barely make the tournament and definitely the NIT this past season. Next season the talent is undeniably there to make the tournament if Ponds returns. As for a viable alternative if he fails (and I truly hope he doesn't)...you can start with Will Brown from Albany. I would have hired Dan Hurley before Mullin was hired, but since it didn't work out that way Brown would be a pretty clear candidate. Not the sexiest name, but he gets the most out of Albany and they always go very deep in their conference tourney and often win it. Let's hope this isn't even necessary.

Mike Zaun wrote: I think it's because:

1) they are old compared to the recruits...I'll be honest I just turned 29 and I had no idea who Mitch Richmond was until we hired him. It's not like I didn't watch the NBA either as a Knicks fan...I wasn't a huge NBA fan but I paid attention as most common fans. I heard the name Chris Mullin a few times but honestly I didn't know much about him as a kid. Keep in mind when he was on the dream team I was 3 and when he was in the Final Four I was -4. After all that, I'm over 10 years older than kids we recruit. So it's even more separated by time.

I don't think it's this because if someone is so basketball ignorant that they do not know who Chris Mullin is, they could be told as part of the recruiting pitch. Problem solved.

Mike Zaun wrote:
2) I can't claim to know for a fact, but by all accounts from insiders the word is that Mullin and Richmond are far from front and center. Rather, they seem to be in the nosebleeds. When Mullin was first hired we all got so excited because he said he'd be knocking down NYC area gym doors implying he'd be a ferocious recruiter. Then with Richmond, we figured they'd be showing up at recruits' doors parading their NBA HOF and All Star credentials. Again exciting. But by all accounts quite the opposite is happening. Mitch just seems to be taking up space almost as if someone's father owned a business and simply created a BS position just to give his son a job. I could be totally wrong but that's the perception and it seems to be a popular one. Where there's smoke, there's usually fire.[/quote]

I don't understand myself why Richmond can't just be in his original role, as it sure seems to be a better fit. Basically we have been playing an assistant short since Slice departed and I don't get it.

Are you gonna be one of the fans making those comments? Be sure to let us know when you do, and how Mitch responds.

If the staff needs this board's help then they are in even worse shape than the most critical posters might be implying.

Re viable alternatives at this time that's a moot point. The program really needs this staff to step up, warts and all, and accomplish something. Like so many have said, regardless how you feel about Mullin the program would be in far worse shape trying to replace him. But, FWIW I reviewed the list of coaches hired in the 2015 off season and at the time would likely have preferred at least 8 of them (and even a couple that were fired) to Mullin at the time. Though to be fair at least four of them likely wouldn't have even considered STJ at all and a couple more would probably look at the job they took as the better opportunity. I've made no secret then or now that I'm against hiring people devoid of experience in any facet of the job they are being selected to undertake. However, the up side of that approach is that if you keep them around long enough they should only be able to get better at their jobs.

The point is the staff doesn't need his board's help, even though we're entitled to voice our opinion.B)

Of course. The general was implying that harsh criticism on this board was hindering the staff and that lack of such would help the staff. Mostly hooety.

The General needs some R&R. I recommend Bangkok. Maybe while he is there Cockburn commits early to us and the General is a happy soldier after going around the world and getting the royal treatment.
