I have not been a regular visitor to Redmen.com for the past several weeks so I was surprised by the "Jerry Springer" like culture that the site has taken on. For that reason I thought that it would be helpful to re-post the Rules of the site which the site's owner posted in 2012 which I have included below. I have also included a followup post by my Moderator The Honorable "Lawmanfan" which articulates Paul's Rules.

The bottom line is that starting tomorrow I and at least 2 other Moderators will begin to enforce the Rules which will result in the posters complying with the Rules. or there being more deleted/ edited posts, or poster(s) being banned from posting on this site.

Forum Rules

October 23, 2012
Forum rules and general guidelines for posting and commenting. This list is not meant to be comprehensive. You should always use your best judgment and keep in mind that the site is read by a very diverse group of people including children. Most of us are alumni or students of a Catholic, Vincentian University and we should reflect that spirit of charity and respect. Do you represent your school well or do you represent your school as an idiot? Use common sense and basic levels of civility:

1. You will not post copyrighted material on this website in any form.

2. No cursing. That generally includes no using characters to replace letters, use of creating spelling or spacing, etc.. We're not going to try to give you a comprehensive list of what cursing or modified cursing breaks the rules. If you're guilty, you know you are, and we're not going to play lawyer with you about it.

3. No insulting other posters. You can disagree with somebody. You can explain why their idea or theory or opinion doesn't make sense. You can even gently mock their ideas. You cannot, however, insult other posters. Even if you think their post is stupid, try to restrain yourself from calling them stupid. Don't demean them, their jobs, their family members, etc.. We let a certain amount slide by because some of it is inevitably part of the nature of debate and discussion, but we will use our judgement to move, edit, or delete posts when we think it gets out of hand.

4. No trolling, baiting, flaming, etc. This is defined as posting for the sole or primary purpose of inciting other posters. Again, we are not going to play lawyer with you about it, so if you stay far away from the line it won't be an issue.

5. No derogatory statements about members of the clergy. A classic violation here is failing to use an appropriate honorific. Whether you like someone or not, or share their religious views or not, including the proper honorific is simply good manners. This rule is equally applicable to all religions and faiths.

6. No derogatory posts regarding race, color, ethnicity, creed, or religion. This applies both to individuals and institutions of any race, color, ethnicity, creed and religion.

7. No personally derogatory statements about SJU employees or players. You are free to comment on the quality of someone's work or play. You cannot comment on their coloring, weight, intelligence, or other personal characteristics, certainly not in a negative way.

8. No spamming the site. Make your point. Just don't do it over and over and over and over and over to the point where it is repetitive. Eventually we will start doing something with your posts so that your fellow posters are not subjected to reading the same thing.

9. Post in the appropriate forum. We have about a dozen forums. Don't start a religion or women's basketball or lacrosse thread in the hoops forum. Eventually, we'll move it. If a thread starts fine and then veers off topic, eventually we will move all or part of the thread to where we think it belongs.

10. Give the moderators a break. We all started as posters - just like you. And we're still posters - just like you. We are volunteers, and we get absolutely nothing for the joy of moderating. No money, no parting gifts, nothing - except the headache of reading the site, trying to exercise our best judgment about how to keep things within the rules, and the grief from the offended parties about what we did and when we did it and how we did it. If you don't understand or don't like what we did, don't call out the moderators publicly. Send any one of us a PM. You'll get an answer, we promise. We can't promise that you'll like it, but you will get one, and it will almost certainly be that we are using our judgement to keep things in compliance with one of the above rules.

Posters:

The below was posted on a recent thread to remind some of our members of the Site Rules on this thread, and perhaps to provide some clarification. Regrettably several posters found themselves unable to comply and as a result the moderators and the site owner felt compelled to revoke their privileges on the site.

Understand that the ONLY circumstance in which someone's privileges may be revoked is a violation of site rules, and that the moderators ALWAYS provide a warning before action is taken. In the current case, it was the unanimous opinion of the moderators that action was required.

Please do your best to keep the site readable so that everyone can enjoy it.

I would suggest that posters take a few things into consideration. This would be particularly relevant to some who have posted on this thread.

First, read the site rules. They are sticky-ed in the top of this forum. Not hard to find.

Second, don't get cute. While some of the moderators happen to be lawyers, we aren't going to lawyer with you. You all know the basics: don't curse, don't insult other posters (even when they insult you), don't denigrate the players, coaches, or university staff personally, don't spam the site. "Don't curse" does not mean come up with cutesy ways around it. "Don't insult other posters" is of course difficult, since no-one is as smart as you, or you, or you. But find a way to disagree without being disagreeable. It's possible, really. Try. "Don't denigrate the players, etc" should be easy. Feel free to comment on bonehead plays or coaching. You can criticize someone's performance, within reason. Stay away from haircuts, tattoos, race, color, creed, etc. Here's a tip for "don't spam the site." If you post more than 3 times on the same thread, the glimmer of a thought should start to enter your head that you've said enough. If you post 10 times on the same thread, that glimmer should become a spotlight. If you go 15+, then we are talking about the headlight of an onrushing train that is about to run you over.

Third, don't call out or otherwise harass the moderators. They are fans and volunteers. They don't get paid for doing what they do. All they get is to satisfaction of contributing to a readable site that allows all of you to talk about the team we all root for. That someone is a moderator doesn't mean that they don't get to post, or to have opinions, or anything else. There are about a dozen moderators, some of whom are more visible to you than others, but all of whom are regularly on the site and who may move your posts. There is absolutely no reason for any of you to call out any moderator on your (almost invariably wrong) assumption that the moderator you may have seen post did something to your pearls of wisdom. If you are perplexed, PM any of the mods and you will get an answer. You may not like the answer, but what you can be assured of is that whatever was done was considered by the moderators and that most or all of them agreed with whatever was done. That's the way it works. This is not an unregulated free-for-all, and if you don't like it then you should find someplace else to post.

Finally, if you get a PM from a moderator on behalf of the group of moderators calling something to your attention, then if you want to keep posting here then you should probably take it into consideration. Because usually if things get to that point then you have offended a large majority of the moderators to the point where suspending or revoking your posting privileges has been strongly considered. Again, if that happens then it's nothing personal - the moderators are a diverse group, and if you get such a PM then you have succeeded in unifying all or almost all of them in condemnation of your posts.

We appreciate everyone's contributions to the site. Think of your posts as flowers, and try not to let them become weeds that choke out the other posts.

Thank you.

Otis, I will certainly heed the message you posted . It needed to be done . The Mods intervening to right the ship was timely . I, for one , intend to turn the page and , move on .. to a new Season and good things for our School and Team . I just received my very nicely presented Invitation to my Class of 1968 50 Year Celebration for the Tobin School . Classy !

Thanks Otis. Agree that for the most part we don't know each other so taking things beyond the discussion of various aspects of the team, and moving on to a personal level, isn't exactly classy. One quick question. Is Pollyanna considered a personal insult? Asking for a friend. ;)

Pollyanna is considered an insult unless you are referring to Otis.
St. Arnulf of Metz - Bishop & member of the court of the Frankish king Theodebert II of Austrasia. A noble, Arnulf married Doda & their son was Ansegisel. Ansegisel married Beggia, the daughter of Pepin of Landen, starting the Carolingian dynasty.
