I guess we need to have a couple of pleasant surprises next season.

It doesn't need to be Mike Rice. There are plenty of other reasonable candidates.

And I don't have anything against Mitch or GSJ - to the contrary both seem like really good guys and that they care about the success of the program.

It's about winning and accountability. Even with year over year incremental progress, just don't think we've won enough or had enough convincing success recruiting to justify continuing with status quo re: staff, let alone to continue with a retired NBA player with no prior college coaching experience and a 2013 college graduate with no prior college coaching experience. Don't think that's living in the real world and is lacking in accountability if program is serious about taking this thing as high as it can go.

As others have noted moving Mitch back to advisory role seems like win-win: program can continue to benefit from Mitch being around program including player development, while assistant seat is opened for someone whose core competency is coaching college basketball and recruiting college basketball players. GSJ moving to third assistant who focuses on advance scouting and game prep while he learns how to recruit on this level. Matt second chair and lead recruiter. New hire a well-rounded and experienced associate head coach type.

Still would likely be fair question about whether we could do better, but at least this staff structure is more palatable, in line with industry standards, and making some form of change is likely commensurate with results last 12 months at a minimum.

Pecora knows how to recruit. Last I read he sent Wright one of his best players

I'd go as far as to say that if there are no major staff changes for next year in terms of assistants, Mullin should resign or be fired. Trying to mix things up and having things not work out is one thing. At least you're trying...but doing the same thing year after year after consistent and clear failure is not acceptable. We are hiring someone then we aren't, then we are, now we aren't. It's maddening how no changes are made as nothing improves.

I dont know what exactly Mullin is doing off scene. But he should have been on campus w Femi, who is a must get. I dont even want to think of next year W/O a grad transfer big.He and Mitch should be busting their arses recruiting. If not, they need to hire another assistant.

Pecora was one of the worst coaches in Fordham history. He didn't send anyone to Wright, he was fired in 2015 and in the process screwed St. John's by blocking us from recruiting Paschall.
The only logical move Mullin can make is reverting Mitch Richmond to his original role as it appears that is all he seems to be doing anyway. He is supposed to be working with developing the players but got a negative review by Owens on his way out the door. He never fully moved to NYC unlike Keady and has his entire family in California while he is in a bachelor pad in NYC. I have never heard him having any interest in recruiting or coaching and as I've said before his PR value has faded

At St. John's nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!

StJohn’s incoming recruit Greg Williams, Jr., a 6’3” shooting guard from Lafayette, La. is rated by Rivals as a 4*.

Tom, you know how much I value and appreciate you, but why don't we just let this recruiting period play out and see how we do next season. I'm as inclined as anyone to be doom and gloom, but unlike many here, I feel last seasons squad began as the best team we had since the Jarvis era. There were many bright spots - the improvement of Ponds, the performance of Simon and Clark, and the contributions of Owens,Ahmed, and Trimble and the final record, to be encouraged.

I agree with your earlier comments about next season in terms of lowering expectations from NCAA bound to something less, but why don't we just see how things develop instead of forecasting horrible results.

Pecora would be a perfect hire. He was highly valued by Wright, is a local guy who would live here, would not be looking for the next best deal to come along, and the Big East would be an upgrade from Qunnipiac. He had a pretty good run at Hoftsra before failing at Fordham. I don't think he would be looking for another HC job, and I believe he would be an asset here as an assistant.

I agree on Pecora. As for winning at Fordham, it's not like the coaches before or after Pecora have fared any better. I could care less if he blocked Paschall, that was then and this is now.
