Give us 10+ wins in BE play, and we'll be dancing - whether we beat the Little Sisters or not. (I hear the Sisters guard the 3 really well and rebound the heck out of the ball, so I wouldn't automatically put it in the W column!) B) B)

Huh I don't understand this...they need to play a tough non conference it helps with SOS and RPI and prepares the team for the BE games.

Agree. We’re not KY or Carolina (yet!). We are penalized when we play a Div II or Div III team.
And I like the idea of bringing back the Holiday Festival—with some tougher competition, just like the old days. No cupcakes. Got to grow up and ‘prove it’ if we want to become real again.

Does a schedule with DII team hurt us or does a victory simply get ignored?

Good question. For us a victory is ignored, worsening our chances to ‘dance’ at the margin—and a loss would be lethal, far costlier than a loss to a solid Div 1 team.

Huh I don't understand this...they need to play a tough non conference it helps with SOS and RPI and prepares the team for the BE games.

I disagree, you need to play a solid non conference schedule these days. Otherwise ten wins will only put you on the bubble. For example, In Big Ten Penn State and Nebraska. Nebraska has 13 conference wins and finished in 4th. You need to play a solid non conference schedule these days.

Obviously my tongue in cheek was missed on this (oh, the perils of trying to bring a bit of humor to an online forum!) - I'm not actually advocating that we play 12 cupcakes (or ANY cupcakes) before the BE schedule starts. And obviously we want to have SOS and quality out of conference wins on our side. My point is that we could go 12-0 against the best non-conference teams in the nation we can find and schedule, but once we get into conference play, if we don't take care of business, we are as good as dead. Heck, if there's one lesson we should learn from this year, this would be it. We were 10-2 leading into conference play (with a building buzz about the program) and it all promptly went out the window as the in-conference losses quickly mounted.

All this said, I'm feeling pretty good about the group of guys that are returning, and the guys we are adding. I'm hoping for a solid season all around next year, both in and out of conference.

A holiday festival with Syr, Conn and Rut. sounds good but without the tournament exemption so the games don't count against the limit that can be scheduled good teams will never participate in a multi game format.
Syr, Conn and Rut will play SJU in MSG if SJU returns the game at their place but no good team is willing to play two games. That's what has killed the Festival. When I was at SJU there were eight teams playing three games but that is long ago and college basketball has changed.
If MSG could somehow get that deal where the games don't count against the number of games allowed you would see Ky, Duke, NC etc looking to play.

The Holiday Festival stopped being a big deal when all the exotic locations started running tournaments. Schools/alumni supporters would rather spend a few days in Hawaii, the Bahamas, and other warm weather locations. NYC doesn't have the allure for these type of in season tourneys it once did. Plus, I'm sure these tourneys give nice cash incentives for the top schools to show up, maybe MSG not so much.

Adam wrote: The Big Ten was a poor major conference this year. They underperformed OOC and only 4/14 teams will make the dance. Compare that to the Big East which will get 6 or 7 out of 10.

We all know SJU had an excellent OOC and only needed about 7/8 conference wins to get on the bubble.

When you schedule a strong OOC, you give your team more control over your outcome. For example, while we only needed 7 BE regular season wins to get on the bubble, we likely would've needed 9-10 regular season Big Ten wins.

One of these years the Big East will have a year like the Big Ten. I rather have a strong OOC to counter that, especially when we have an experienced team very capable of winning.

I think this year's schedule was excellent. I wouldn't make it any tougher, maybe a tad bit easier but not by much.

I agree about this year's schedule. All of those neutral site games really helped us, and we did a masterful job of booking those, even if some like Grand Canyon were a risk. Despite all of the complaining pre season, we ended up with a top 10 strength of schedule. I'd like to see something similar next year.

how do you do a battle of NY and not invite Cuse?

because they are Canada's team ( no offense North )

Agree with most of above ideas. We should play Iona, Fordham. Manhattan and Columbia, either in the campus gyms or in a tournament at MSG.
We should try playing Hofstra at the Nassau Coliseum.
Lastly, we need a big attraction OOC game next year, at MSG, since Duke is away, and the Cuse is afraid to play us anymore. Notre Dame would be a possibility. No UConn.
