The fucking Bruce trade is horrible

Next year's MVP!
What's wrong with getting a single A relief pitcher with an almost 5 era and outside the top 30 prospects in the Cleveland organization for a 30 homer major leaguer? :silly:
rumor was the yankees offered better trade prospect wise but with mets picking up more salary and they said no

typical disgraceful mets

MJ, FWIW its now being reported that the Yankees were not offering much either and were never willing to move off paying only a portion of JB salary. Also, Yanks apparently pulled out of a Neil Walker trade at he deadline using his medicals as the reason. However, sources say the Yanks realized they were going to get Sonny Gray and they (yes the Yankees) were worried about adding too much payroll.

I dislike the Wilpons as much as the next Mets fan but no one seems to notice that there was not much of a market for power hitting outfielders. The only guys moved were JD Martinez and Yonder Alonso (1B) and both did not exactly yield A list return.

They will deserve to be killed if the net result is no added salary during the offseason. They will have cleared a whole bunch of dead money and they better plan on spending that money as they will have holes to fill. (CF, 3B, C)
I feel for Flores...16 homers each of his 1st 2 seasons in limited action and on pace to beat that this year. Guy is a good hitter...hope he gets a chance to play steady at some point...he's one of our guys

Even though I do like an outfield of Cesperes, Lagares and Conforto I'm afraid we will need more power hitting in the lineup. Have a feeling they won't resign Walker and will use Reyes in a utility role. What's to happen with Cabrera - second or third? That leaves Flores as a capable fill in at first or anywhere in the infield. Hopefully we can secure a power hitting third basemen in free agency.

A 2b who has a bad back and hamstring batting 260? Not much to ask for in return.

While we have no luck, I can name a team that has less...

I hope the Mets spend. I did a quick look on Cot's. Payroll was around $154 million this year with about $70-77 million coming off the books for next year. Plus $15 million from insurance for David Wright. The Mets should have money to spend even with increases for arbitration eligible players.

I'd like to see the Mets get another big bat and solidify the middle of the defense. CF (Dyson or Cain), a catcher, and pony up for Moose. Wilmer and TJ can vie for second.

This is really the heart of the issue. I have no problem with shedding the FA's. Bruce, Walker, Reed and potentially Granderson and Cabrera all will come of the books at the end of the season one way or the other. The Mets so far have saved some money this year by having the other team pick up at least some or all of the salary. OK its a business. If they like the player they can attempt to resign them on the open market.

However, as others have mentioned this is the Wilpons we are talking about. I don't want to hear that Rivera/Cabrera are vying for second base and that Wilmer Flores is the answer at third, while praying for Wright to return. Or that Lagares is coming back with Nimmo platooning with him. None of that works. :( They need to spend or trade accordingly to do exactly what you outlined above. None of which is unreasonable or outrageous. Alderson needs to earn his money and the Wilpons need to spend fairly to keep a competitive team on the field. Anything short of that then the Mets should be blasted for these moves. Honestly, I will be waiting to renew my 3 tickets for next season until they prove to me that they plan on doing something with the "saved" money.

Met-Yankee games in August have zero buzz.

When I was a kid, the spring training Mets vs. Yankees Mayor's trophy game meant more - bragging rights, fan interest.

This series illustrates everything wrong with baseball. If the game would ever mean anything in terms of the matchup it would be before the trading deadline, where teams now play out the string with 2 months left to go by means of depleted rosters and massive player selloffs.

A generation ago, Bowie Kuhn blocked the Oakland A's from making a massive selloff of high priced stars to the Yankees because the trade wasn't balanced. Today, it's an accepted practice around this time of year. Cashing your chips in late July by getting rid of salary is incredibly detrimental to baseball. Fully one third of the season for many teams is now a total joke, and fans buying their tickets early in the season for August and September what appeared to be competitive games instead watch minor league prospects and bench players going through the motions.
