if we do get Kante ( and I believe we will) will you call it a good job by the staff on this?

I would still be very disappointed with our front court depth and talent going into next year, but I would take some solace in the fact that we would at least have the luxury of an additional big body to eat up some minutes in the event of injury and/or foul trouble.

Perhaps I was being unrealistic, but I really believed the staff would have no problem reeling in a solid fifth year contributor up front.

So the point of the initial post was to complain either way? Your question of what if we don't get Kante was just to introduce another complaining post? Who was the fifth year post that you wanted and what will be the thing that finally satisfies you? I'll tell you that from what I have seen there is not one 5th year transfer that would have started on this team. That being said if you like you say want an additional big body to eat minutes then we might as well offer the 7'2 Serb . When he signs you will say we should have done better . Help is coming :)

Agreed. There really wasn't a lot of options when it came to grad transfer bigs that would help us. Most of the bigs that would help were sit out transfers. The 7'2" Serb couldn't even get minutes on a JUCO team, yet people want him to come here and solve our problems.

Everybody has to remember, these grad transfer bigs are leaving their schools to play for a chance at the NCAA tournament. It isn't exactly easy recruiting these kids when we have been at the bottom of the BE.

Hopefully other coaches (Mitch) help Matt A with recruiting soon. We really need a second body out there for much of the summer. If Mitch doesn't want to do it, let's go find a coach that will

I am sure a big man is coming, even if he is barely able to contribute. The staff knows we simply cannot go into the season as presently constituted. Owens and Yakwe are prone to foul trouble. They know they have to add a big body.

Hope whoever the kid is becomes a pleasant surprise.

Matt should go to Ruckers or west 4th park.

Gotta be some big bodies there.

Here's another guy we wont get: www.theuconnblog.com/2017/4/3/15164478/u...t-return-next-season

6-11 from UConn. Would have to sit a year. Once a 4 star recruit, but injuries limited his playing time at Uconn and is now be recruited over.

The purpose of my post was indeed to express my frustration as I think is appropriate on a fan board. From what I've read, it seems unlikely that Kante is ready to be a consistent contributor next year. That said, it also seems he has some potential.

Those who know more than me uniformly seem to think the 7 footer would contribute very little this year or next. Accordingly, I think signing Kante is clearly the better choice.

I'm disappointed because I'm doubtful that either signing will provide us with the experienced and consistent presence I think we so desperately need next year. As others have pointed out, next year is a critical year for us. Lack of measurable success next year will make it difficult for us to successfully recruit going forward. Conversely, achieving some modicum of success next year will undoubtedly make us a more attractive choice for some recruits.

Happy, you clearly know the recruiting landscape far better than me so I won't even attempt to challenge your knowledge. I'm not sure, however, I agree that there were no fifth year transfers who could have started for us. But even if you're correct, I don't think we necessarily needed a starter. We just needed a guy who could consistently come in for 20 minutes or so, play solid defense, rebound, and bang. I thought a player like Zanna would have been a good addition. Didn't have to be him per se, but that type of player. I'm not sure as a freshman Kante is there yet. In any event, I truly do hope we sign him.

Speaking of other coaches out recruiting, is a potential addition/staff shakeup in play?

Unfortunately, if the pickings are indeed slim, we may have to reach for a guy that has these questions. he is big. he seems fit. He has to be able to give us 10 minutes that are at least as valuable (not a high bar) as AliB. If it is a conditioning issue, that can be addressed. As of now, (i) I hope Yakwe wakes up; (ii) hopefully Kante can play 15 or so as a freshman; (iii) maybe Ahmed can play bigger than he did this year (focus more on the boards); (iv) I am hoping we can expect Owens to progress and stays healthy and out if foul trouble most nights; (v) hope Clark can play the 4 with toughness and (vi) we should sign up the Serb (unless the ship has already sailed). That's a lot of hoping and expecting, but.....

If as Paultz has said the Serb is our back-up plan, it seems we are at the point we need to resort to that plan B and should lock him up before we lose him. Unless of course, there is some mystery guy out there we don't know about, but at this stage, how likely is that?

This kid might not ne a 4* but we can not avid to lose him It could have recruiting complications

Being stuck for two years with a kid who has less skill than our current big man who everyone rags on on this site would be a bigger complication, don't you think?

We have no one who is a natural 5. Yakwe, Alibegovic and Owens cannot play the 5. It would be nice to have one, even for 10 minutes per game. Would help in practice sessions also to go against a big big who can simulate opposing big even if he plays sporadically. Then again, game preparation has not been a staff priority from some of the debacles this past season with one sided losses and losses to Delaware State and LIU. I think most here agree that year 3 will determine the future of this staff. A winning season and securing early commitments from a couple of targets will restore some confidence in the fan base. Those two things don't happen and year 4 will be like a visit from the ghost of Brian Mahoney. His coaching tenure still haunts me.

Reasonable thoughts, but thinking some stiff who couldn't get off the bench in juco is the answer is completely unreasonable. The guy will suck so hard at SF next season it's not even funny. I honestly think finding the best local D-2 big makes more sense.

He was actually a starter on the JUCO National Championship team. I looked at his minutes which averaged out to around 10pg but was actually made up of a lot of games under 5 or 6 minutes and a few with more minutes but in ever game I looked at, he started. His stats averaged out to 40 are not bad and in the one game where he got 23 minutes stats were decent. Why he started and then rode the bench in most games is the question but I suspect as with most extra large guys it has to do with stamina. So for our purposes he might be a 5 mpg guy but if he could provide 5 solid minutes and be disruptive in the way Curtis Johnson was, that might actually help our undersized team. Again, my opinion is that we need a ready to start, grad transfer with good size and hands. Then if we could also land Kante as our future and maybe some frosh minutes, a 3rd big man option would also be needed. All hypothetical if he is already headed for USF, I'm just saying that we need 3 bigs. This guy probably doesn't have the wind to give us a ton of minutes regardless but I would not mind have a 7'2" 240lb guy on our roster. Cujo had physical problems getting up and down the court but made a difference for us in a couple of games.
