And of course the NIT used to be THE tournament -
as an anecdote...
Circa late 1960s
then Heading Coach Bobby Knight once turned town an NCAA bid and instead brought his Army team...
To the NIT!

A bit of conflation. In 1970 Al McGuire turned down an NCAA tournament bid after being sent to Texas rather than to the Midwest regional. Marquette went to and won the NIT instead, beating in the final St John’s, despite 15 points and 17 rebounds from Billy Paultz. St John's beat Army in the semi finals, then coached by Bobby Knight. Marquette beat LSU in the semi final, Pete Maravich's last game.

UCLA (Henry Bibby, Sidney Wicks, Curtis Rowe) beat Jacksonville in the championship game of the NCAA. St Bonaventure made the Final Four but Bob Lanier (averaging that year a mere 29 points and 16 rebounds) got hurt in the regional final and didn't play. Interestingly I found in the wayback machine several messages from ye olde Bonnie forum dot com where well informed posters opined that Lanier's injury was addition by subtraction because he was auditioning for the NBA rather than playing within a team concept.

Such a nice post Fun and you recall - or at least researched - a lot more than I did!
I do remember "we"/ Army were always a top defensive team and circa 1968 the Army team took a bus to alumni hall and beat the Redmen!!!

I was on another bus carrying cadets - for a NYC kid and basketball fan what a treat that was :)

Thanks!

I am so sick of living in the past on this forum. We have not done anything of substance since 1985! That is over 30 f
n years ago.
I often wonder if this program will ever be a token of what it once was!
Just getting weary!

LoVett's status will depend on how much $$ he can get overseas. Family may be disappointed by the numbers they have seen thus far.

That disappointment may result in him staying (which I want). However, I can't help but to think there is a difference between a kid who is pumped about his college career and a kid who is on the prowl for a professional opportunity. I like Lovett and I not am judging his character or commitment. I just prefer the other mind set.
