If we go with this roster without adding anyone and we lose one, just one player to injury, suspension, mid season transfer ( I know its hard to believe any of these can happen to us- wink wink ), I will be screaming from my seats letting the staff know that they COULD HAVE prepared for this situation during the off season.

Please elucidate how the staff COULD HAVE better prepared for this situation. Do you and SKnortz think the staff isn't working hard enough or do you think they're being too selective and didn't call any grad transfers or do you guys just think they're inept. I understand you're disappointed but it's hard to tell what your specific issues are so it's hard to respond. Probably pointless as well but I thought I'd give it a shot.

I think the problem is that many of us are not plugged in enough to provide you with the specifics of what the staff is doing wrong. It's undeniable, however, that the results or lack thereof this recruiting cycle have been frustrating to date.

The frustration is magnified given that: (1) we have a solid returning nucleus, but also have a glaring weakness up front. Therefore our immediate recruiting need is quite specific; (2) we are heading into a critical year three of the Mullin era presently with only eight eligible players plus Amar; (3) many of our top 2018 targets have committed or appear to be leaning elsewhere; (4) we are apparently paying Slice approx. $500k per year for doing nothing; and (5) by all accounts, Matt is the only coach on our staff consistently hitting the recruiting trail.
I believe Happy/Paultz summarized this already and based on their credible info, I take that as being plugged in.

Understand all that. Just get tired for the endless expressions of frustration, many sprinkled with a healthy dose of delusion, that add absolutely nothing to the conversation.

Yeah I get it. I'm probably one of the offenders, but I think it's important to remember that we all love the program and are rooting hard for it to succeed. Otherwise we wouldn't be debating the twitter feed of an 18 year old kid or posting stuff in the middle of a work day.

I am not sure why I am getting called out. I only asked (because I don't know) why we wouldn't be reaching out to every eligible transfer who played forward or center. I did not disparage the staff's effort. I have no idea how hard the staff works or what work the job requires. I am disappointed by the results. Only one transfer has come for a visit and he signed. Given the available time for big men, it would seem that some might be intrigued but apparently not. If the staff is calling kids and getting consistently rejected, something needs to change.

Earlier this week, I had posted about the eligible transfer from Kansas, who had just gotten his release. Moose said rather emphatically that the Messiah said something to the effect of "no transfers". Yesterday, I tried to figure out why SJU would not want eligible transfers. I came up with a few reasons, none of which I found to be compelling.

My question to you is what makes you think they are not. You ask that question as if you know the substance of the question to be true. And you didn't do it just once. That's why I called you out.

A little off-topic, but I bumped into Amar in the Herald Square subway station this afternoon. (He's hard to miss, especially with that 'do.) Anyway, said hi to him, and his face lit up -- getting recognized in the subway while he was with his mother must have meant something to him. Anyway, as expected, he was very nice and polite -- all smiles -- and made a point of introducing me to his mom. Told him we need a big year from him. I know I've been one of his toughest critics, but he is a Johnnie, and a genuinely nice kid and good teammate as well, and we likely will need a big contribution from him next year if we're going to go anywhere.

All Cappy is saying is, to date, we have not added one additional player of substance to next years roster from the 17 class. The two transfers arrived on campus last year. The current transfer won't be eligible until the 2018-19 season.
And, he is 100% correct that if Owens or Yakwe are injured our interior depth will have a big hole. Not that hard to imagine because we are..........

Sorry my reading comprehension is too good to believe your first paragraph regarding what you think Cappy is saying., Your second paragraph is obvious and we all know it but thanks for repeating it for the umpteenmillionth time.

You're welcome. Many here will keep repeating the second sentence since for "next season", it is the only thing worth discussing regarding the roster makeup. The guards and forwards are pretty much set in stone. Of course we can digress and discuss the great wonder five years, Frank McGuire, Lou Carnesecca for the one millionth time, what an empty roster Lavin left in 2015, Matt's tireless work ethic, and anything else not pertaining to next season.
Whatever floats your boat.

We all are pretty sure that the staff is reaching out. We even hosted a 7 footer whom " insiders" claimed was only a backup plan. Of course it begs the question "a backup to what or whom" that 3 available scholarships can't seem to accommodate?
Calling out fans for asking WTF is going on is boorish and condescending. This is a forum to share opinions and ask pertinent questions about the basketball program. If the same question is asked many times it is likely because no one has ventured a satisfactory answer for some. If people share the same opinions doesn't make them any more annoying than the fans who continously disagree with that opinion.
There are only a couple of experts that belong to this forum that are very "very" close to the program and coaches and they never post. Everyone else is sharing information second hand. News starved fans will take what they can get and given some of our ages, we will tend to repeat ourselves. So, please be patient. ;)

First, I thought you had boorish and fun had condescending all wrapped up in most people's eyes. Glad I could join the party. Better than being thought of as ignorant and delusional.

I will only state that there's a difference between stating folks uninformed opinions and posing uninformed assumptions as fact. I get it, 99% of the board is uninformed, and that's not a problem. Making uninformed factual assumptions is the problem with me. SKnortz repeating the question obviously assumes as fact that the staff "don't reach out to every eligible transfer". I called him out because he has shared nothing to back up how he came to that assumption yet keeps stating it repeatedly as if its so.

Regarding recruiting difficulties it probably has less to do with effort and more to do with the mix of a low profile university that still, maybe undeservedly, has a commuter school reputation with a low academic profile, in a part of town that only people from Queens consider New York City, with an inexperienced coaching staff that pins much of its hopes on a legend that kids today have never heard of is not going to get serious attention from every possible recruit compared to a large number of other schools in same game. I understand many of those comments may not be fair but I used them to point out that they all hold more factual weight than the assumption that the staff isn't reaching out to all eligible transfers. See how that works.

Yet with all those negatives taken into account, the staff have actually done a pretty good job stocking the roster with quality players from the 1-4. The top 7 of the roster are all either top 100 recruits, JC AAs and/or transfers who at least got some time as frosh/sophs at major college programs. Then there's Fred and Amar who at least are Italian, what's not to love? The one glaring exception being a serviceable big to replace Sima/Willams. I just take exception to the folks who claim this shortfall is due to lack of trying.

PS everyone's hung up on 3 available scholarships. However, until Sima transferred they had -1 scholarship available for 1718, until Brown was arrested they had 0, that was in January. Until Ellison and Williams transferred at the end of March they only had one but by they time they got that one for the Class of '17 and were able to truthfully say they had rides to give it was pretty much over. The transfer game was the great hope and they appear to have gotten at least one good one. And now they look to be getting another top 100 kid late in the game. But the grad transfer big, like you said and everyone agrees, is where there seems to have been the biggest let down. I kind of believe the staff knows that better than any of us but really can 't say that publicly.
