PJ as special assistant. At this point he doesn't need the spotlight. Could be fine with running practice, game planning and taking a back seat on game day.

I hear Jeff Van Gundy wants back on the sidelines but not in a high pressure head coaching position. More like an associate head coach. o teach hard-nosed defense. He loves the NY area. He is tight with Mark Jackson. Plus he has DEEP respect for Chris after all those Pacers series. I really think this could really happen, possibly before the end of the year.
Well there go our MSG games. Dolan won't let Van Gundy in the building, and if Jeff does get past Dolan, Phil will get to him (Gumby that is).

Gene Keady is available. Or Yoda. I hear they are the same guy. Yoda may have better hair though.

Hire him understanding it will be his platform to gain a head coach job somewhere within 2 or so years, so be it. Hire him.

We already complain that the head coach takes a back seat to one of his assistants. Hard to imagine Rice sitting on the bench and letting Mullin run the show.

There is a big difference between allowing your huddle to be ran by someone with experience as a head coach of multiple programs vs. a 26 year old who had never been a coach or ran a practice in his life prior to starting last at St John's last year.

Mike Rice would actually be a terrific assistant here. He has made amends and rehabilitated himself after his offenses at Rutgers and has worked on the lower rungs of the coaching latter as an AAU and HS coach since. In addition to the experience and toughness he would bring to the table, he also currently coaches 3 or 4 kids we're recruiting so he would be an asset to assist in bringing them on board as well. Would be a big fan of bringing Mike Rice onto the staff. I also think he would work really hard because he has a chip on his shoulder and something to prove.

Well said. The question I have to ask is why is the coaching staff inexperienced down the whole line? We cant afford to have St Jean learn on the job when our other coaches don't have coaching exp. IMO. Ive also mentioned Rice. A lot of exp. and would not be asking a lot of money. He went to the Lucas academy ,has been working on his problems and deserves a chance.

In my opinion I don't think hiring another assistant coach is the issue here. Mullin and Richmond know basketball better than most. As Bill Parcells famously said, "It's not about the X's and O's it's about the Jim's and the Joe's". It's about the players. We need to recruit better players and the players we do have who have the potential to be very good Big East players are very young and need experience. right now we have Ponds, Lovett, Ahmed and Mussini who are Big East caliber players and we are bringing in three more next year. Yakwe, Freudenberg, Ellison, Owens and Williams can be good players but need to mature and most of all get more game experience. Mullin started from nothing, literally. we need to bring in more quality players who are Big East ready from the get go like Ponds , Ahmed and Lovett. It's not about the X's and O's it's about the Jim's and the Joe's.

I see your point, but if it was strictly about the players we may as well put Mike Maher on the bench and let our HoF coaches spend all their time with Matt on the recruiting front. Mike can wear himself out jumping out of his seat with his arms raised to the ceiling when ponds and crew hit their threes.

It takes top line players and excellent coaching to win at this level. Top talent can go to waste without excellent coaching. Coaching is much more of a factor than 5 or ten percent.

As others have expressed here, as a fan of the program, I the see improvement in the coaching this year with the exception of the del state no show - and they responded well to that lapse.

It's another year of growth for the team and a new staff.

John Calapari is not known as a great coach when comes to X's and O's. He wins because almost every Kid on his team is a top 20 Kid. He doesn't need to be a great tactician when he's bringing in that kind of talent year in and year out.
that's kind of an extreme example.

Look what happened with Cuse last year without Boeheim and then with him

Thanks for reminding me to put a "mal'occhio" on Boeheim. We need Mike Hopkins to coach next week.

Excellent evil eye. I'm more confident now re the Syracuse game.

I agree that not having one experienced coach on staff is an obvious and glaring error in judgement. However, I am not as keen on Mike Rice. I think he is a talented coach, but I can't get the video of him out of my head. It takes a significant personality disorder to behave like that. There are many experienced coaches out there.

And I am sure other teams would have that video queued up on their phone for any potential recruit that had SJU on their list.

I tried saying the same earlier in this thread, however, given my frustration with this staff and the stubbornness of CM in regard to his staff and friends, I couldn't phrase it as eloquently. Well said.

At the present time, Mike Rice is the coach of The Patrick School where Nick Richards Plays. He also coaches Team Rio with Scottie Lewis and Bryan Antoine. If the video was still relevant, these kids would not be playing for him. He has gone through therapy and treatment for his issues and would be a solid addition to this staff. The fact that he is showing that he can coach and relate to current high school players is a plus. Others such as PJ are too far removed from college ball. Rice would also have the endorsement of Rob Kennedy the founder of Hoop Group who gave him his first opportunity after he was dismissed from Rutgers. His coaching knowledge is well respected by those who know him. He will be a college assistant next year and if happens at St. Johns. I would be very happy.
