I would normally agree, but this isn’t the hiring of a coach just to get the player and then forcing that coach out shortly after. This is a former high major HC with good experience and recruiting ties throughout the local area. He will greatly improve our staff in every aspect.

And before people bring up his past, there have been tons of nice things said about him from people like D’Lo and his current kids. It really seems like he’s a different person.

So then if Jalen Gaffney doesn't come and Lewis and others go elsewhere you still want Rice? C'mon answer honestly. Or is it quid pro quo?
Ok, I don't want him but if the Administration (AD) and Coach want him why haven't they hired him? No other school has jumped in either as this was brought up last season. He's out there. We could consider others if AD/Coach wants another assistant. However, outside of Redmen.com I haven't seen us linked to anyone including Rice.
Interesting that you tried to short circuit someone bringing up his past. You know he was fired for verbally and physically abusing student athletes right?

Probably means the kid doesn't really want to be here anyway and what type of person are we hiring that can only get a job by bringing on an 18 year old. I know its not popular but that's the way I feel. No thank you.

Not extortion at all on Mike's part!
His players love him and although Paultzman feels positive any move by Rice to another school would change that outlook in a NY minute if the other coach had interest. That is my opinion but when you consider our batting record it is going to make a big difference in who makes the "final pitch".

‘72, are you saying we have a shot at hiring Rice? Wasn’t it Pitt, he was recently linked to? And you think we need Mike Rice to get Jalen and have a shot at others?

So you don’t put words in my mouth72, operating on assumption that Rice does not join staff, I do not see any chance for Lewis. Antoine has really not been in reach imo. Lastly, you and I differ on Gaffney. I have heard he is within reach and has sold relationship with staff. That said, although not in the class of Lewis and Antoine, he has developed well and will have many suitors.

I don't disagree and I have only seen a few clips of his game compared to seeing Slick a dozen times as a high schooler. Slick was about the same height and weight but you could see the star potential and his national rankings justified his talent on the next level. I hope we can get someone with half of Shamorie Ponds talent. I trust your judgment on this one.

At St. John's nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!

The only way we get this kid is by hiring Mike Rice.
Mullin has a difficult decision to make. Unfortunately, even the Maven is no longer convinced Mully will pull the trigger on a staff change.

Yes I am aware he was fired for that. I have seen the videos. But I have heard enough from the people around him now to say he deserves a second chance at this level.

And the reason he hasn’t been hired yet is because there are no openings on the staff. Mullin would have to demote/fire Mitch which isn’t an easy thing to do to one of your best friends. He’s already had to do that once and probably didn’t enjoy it.

I don't agree with whole best friend thing so its hard to move him.

Richmond was brought in from the beginning as special assistant / advisor. Only reason he moved up wad that it was a quick and easy fill for Slice that didn't $ to payroll other than a bump if Richmond got one.

If Richmond was a true best friend, he would realize he's not out on road, twitter and texting to grinding to get teenagers attention and would volunteer to move back to his original role.

If that happened, and Mullin is OK with it, then it's beyond me to think Mullin can buck the trend of how most, if not all other successful staffs are set up responsibility wise.

Of the many many talented coaches out there it seems that it is always Mike Rice's name that pops up in threads on this site. I confess that I do not have the knowledge or insight into why that is. To some he seems to be a panacea for all that supposedly ails our program and to others he simply has too much baggage to invest in him coming here. Regardless I am still confused as to why his name pops up so often. Is this a real serious possibility for St. John's or just a prolonged fantasy that people are obsessed with?

It doesn't have to be Rice, but he fits the profile we desperately need (coaching experience and AAU connections). I think his name comes up mostly because, right now, it seems like a perfect marriage of mutual convenience.
