When St. John's got smacked by 40 points to Marquette last week, I thought we had seen the last of Inside the Boxscore. Sitting there with a losing record, the Red Storm wasn't going to be selected by NIT....but the College Basketball Invitational decided to extend the misery for one more game. So along came the Spiders who dominated in the second half and officially ended SJU's season. The loss means that the Red Storm finish 2-11 on the road. The only wins to come at a building not called Carnesecca Arena or Madison Square Garden were against Cornell in the Preseason NIT at Boston College and at DePaul. SJU was up by eight at half-time and outrebounded Richmond by 23 but finished with 22 turnovers and shot 26.7 percent (8-of-30) in the second half. The 22 turnovers were the most forced by Richmond this season and the Spiders scored 27 points of the miscues. The Red Storm started the game on a 19-5 run and shot 62.1 percent from the field in the first half. After scoring 41 points in the first 20 minutes, SJU had 28 in the final 20 minutes. It took more than 10 and a half minutes before the Red Storm scored 10 points in the second half. Sean Evans had a career-best 25 points (on 12-of-13 shooting no less) and 11 rebounds for his ninth double-double of the season. Evans tied his previous career-high with 19 points on 9-of-9 shooting in the first half. D.J. Kennedy had a 17-point, 12-rebound performance. Richmond scored 12 of the first 16 points in the second half as part of a 21-6 run. David Gonzalves scored 14 of his 27 points in the second half. SJU had 21 second-chance points; the Spiders had four. Justin Burrell had nine points, nine rebounds. and four blocks. Paris Horne had nine points but was 3-of-16 shooting, 2-of-10 on three-pointers. SJU was just 3-of-16 on three-pointers, Richmond made 12-of-20 attempts. Unfortunately I was unable to locate any quips and queries for the regular segment known as Norm's Normisms. Perhaps the silence is better. |
