It's over. It's finally over!!! No, not the Norm Roberts' era. That has at least one more game. No you sillies, I'm referring to the end of the 2008-09 season. The one that saw victories over Bethune-Cookman and NJIT, blowout losses to name the opponent, and concluded in an up-and-down fashion -- wins over DePaul and Georgetown, loss to Notre Dame. Notre Dame's win gave then the 10th seed in the Big East Tournament. While SJU is locked into at worst the 13 seed, the Red Storm must wait to see what happens with Georgetown and Seton Hall before knowing its matchup. The Irish have won five straight at home against the Red Storm. The loss guarantees a fourth losing season in five years under Norm Roberts, barring a miracle run in the Big East Tournament. Justin Burrell led SJU with 17 points. Ironically the last time he scored at least that many points was the first meeting (He had 18). Burrel also had eight rebounds. Sean Evans had 11 points and 16 rebounds. SJU missed all 12 of its three-point attempts in the first half and was 3-of-23 from beyond the arc. Paris Horne was 1-of-10 and D.J. Kennedy was 1-of-6. On the other side, Notre Dame was nine-of-19. The Red Storm shot 29 percent, the lowest total by a Notre Dame opponent. SJU was 20-of-69 overall. The main culprits -- Horne (4-of-19), Evans (4-of-11), D.J. Kennedy (2-of-9), and Rob Thomas (2-of-7). Despite the lopsided score, the Red Storm outrebounded Notre Dame, 44-40, and had just eight turnovers. with so many misses, SJU had 19 offensive rebounds and Notre Dame had 34 defensive rebounds. The Irish had a 12-points half-time lead (36-24) and led by as many as 21 in the second half. Luke Harangody led Notre Dame with 31 points and 12 rebounds. Norm's recylced Normisms: "Give Notre Dame a lot of credit. They played very well at home. (Luke) Harangody was very, very good tonight. We did not do a very good job of guarding him, but he scored away from the basket and he scored in close. He did a very good job for them. I thought we did a decent job on the perimeter players. We let (Ryan) Ayers get free a couple of times for shots. We also had a lot of shots, we had a lot of easy shots early and didn't make them and against a great scoring team like that you have to make shots." |
