Lapchick Book

Quote

"It was amazing to watch Joe Lapchick stage his own fabulous retirement party by winning both premier MSG college tournamnets in 1964-65--the Holiday Festival and National Invitation--to close his St. John's coaching career. What an exit! It was an emotional thrill to be a telecaster at both tournaments and witness the thunderous ovation for Joe."

Horne headed to Big East

Hoops Recruiting

Teams are locking up the best players on the recruiting board slowly but surely as the basketball season is quietly wrapping up. St. John's added a piece to it's 2007 recruiting puzzle by landing prep school guard Paris Horne.

The athletic 6-foot-3 guard from Bridgton (Me.) Academy via Middletown, Del., verbally committed to St. John's earlier in the week, according to his head coach Whit Lesure.

Horne, a do-everything guard, has shined for Bridgton this season and struck a cord with the mid-majors and became a hot target for high-majors. Virginia Tech, Clemson, Cal and the Redmen all jumped into the picture while Ohio and George Mason put in the work to the end.

"I think he had more contact with St. John's because of Justin Burrell (who signed with the Big East school in the fall) and the Big East was a big draw," Lesure said. "He's an East Coast kid and he kind of grew into the idea of hitting the ground floor and helping turn around the program instead of filling a roster spot somewhere else…There was an appeal to play at that level and the opportunity was there."

Horne was impressive in the fall at the National Prep Showcase and has shined against the top prep schools in the country this year.

"When we played Hargrave, he was big. They have guys going to Virginia, Virginia Tech, Ohio State and all over and Paris scored 25 points and was the best player in that game," Lesure said.

"He has not hit his ceiling yet and I do think St. John's recruited him for the right reasons. They weren't recruiting him simply to sign somebody. They know what they are getting in him. They see it in the kid. He's a winner. I know you can say that about a lot of kids these days but not at the level he is doing it at.

"It's easy to root for him. He's a good human being."
