Team News ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY NAMES "CARNESECCA COURT" IN HONOR OF HALL OF FAME BASKETBALL COACH

Aug. 19, 2004

Queens, NY (August 19, 2004) - St. John's University will name its primary basketball court in Alumni Hall "Carnesecca Court" after Hall of Fame Men's Basketball Coach Lou Carnesecca, the University announced today. The court will be officially dedicated

in a ceremony during the upcoming basketball season.

"We are deeply grateful for Lou's dedication to St. John's, both through our men's basketball program and his contributions to the University since his retirement," said Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M. "What better way to honor our beloved 'Coach' - and his wife, Mary - than by naming the court where he spent so many years of his life. We thank the Carneseccas for their love and devotion."

"This is really something," said Coach Carnesecca. "I spent so many years of my life on that court, with so many great players and coaches. I remember the passion that they had for the game, and how much I had for it, too. This is a real honor from my alma mater. I thank Fr. Harrington and everyone at St. John's for thinking so much of me."

Carnesecca coached St. John's for 24 seasons and guided the team to the postseason every year, reaching the NCAA Tournament 18 times and the NIT on six occasions. He has an all-time record of 526-200 for a winning percentage of .725. Inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992, Carnesecca led St. John's to the 1985 Final Four, to the East Regional Final in 1979, the regional semifinals in 1967, 1969, 1983 and 1991 and to five BIG EAST Championships.

Alumni Hall was opened on December 4, 1961, with St. John's beating George Washington, 79-65, and became one of the toughest on-campus facilities in Division I college basketball. St. John's has posted a 375-66 record at Alumni Hall for a winning percentage of .850.
