Mike Jarvis, under fire as St. John’s struggled from the start of this basketball season, says the right things. He talks about education and his role in shaping young lives. But there’s just something about Jarvis that rubs me the wrong way.
I might be able to respect the man and his mission, if he didn’t deliver his message with a condescending manner and a smarmy smile.
Meanwhile, the Red Storm program is crumbling, on and off the court.
They’ve already lost to Fairfield and to Hofstra, both at Alumni Hall, both huge embarrassments for a school that likes to think of itself as something special when it comes to basketball.
Through it, Jarvis has kept that smile, preaching like a man trying to save souls, but he’s not doing much better on that scoreboard.
Earlier this week, just before the Red Storm narrowly avoided another Alumni Hall disaster against St. Francis of Brooklyn, Jarvis and the school announced that Willie Shaw, once a promising prospect, had been dismissed from the team.
