Lapchick Book

Quote

"It was amazing to watch Joe Lapchick stage his own fabulous retirement party by winning both premier MSG college tournamnets in 1964-65--the Holiday Festival and National Invitation--to close his St. John's coaching career. What an exit! It was an emotional thrill to be a telecaster at both tournaments and witness the thunderous ovation for Joe."

Highland's Spears having up-and-down year, but he has no regrets

Hoops Recruiting The Journal-Standard

FREEPORT - As Aaron Spears rumbles down the court, boxes out, or fights for position on the post, one thing almost always remains constant - the smile. If nothing else, the 6-foot-9, 260-pound center always seems to be enjoying himself when he's on the floor.

"He's just goofy. He's a big kid," said Highland point guard Temi Soyebo, who has known Spears since their days playing AAU ball together.

No more than a couple of months ago, though, a smile

Derrick catches everyone's attention

By JULIAN GARCIA
DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

At last summer's prestigious Nike Camp in Indianapolis, only 19 of the 203 players stood 6-9 or taller. Derrick Caracter was one of the them. He was also one of only four who weighed in at over 285 pounds.
As amazing as those facts seem, consider this: At the time, Caracter had yet to step foot onto a high school court. Not because of any disciplinary or eligibility problems, but because Caracter had only just completed eighth grade.

Malcolm Pope Jr. already a hot prospect

By KRISTIE ACKERT

Malcolm Pope Jr. is tired and thirsty. He walks out of the gym at the Fashion Institute of Technology with his friends and heads toward the soda machine. His father trails behind, looking through his son's bag to make sure they have everything before they leave. He's too slow.

Before they can reach the machines, two assistant basketball coaches converge on
